How to Put Blogger Site Offline?

Access Denied to Blogger Blog

Both Blogger and WordPress have an option to put the site offline or make it unavailable permanently or temporarily. You may need to put your site offline for a number of reasons. In this post, I will just talk about how to limit access to a blogger site. At the same time, you can deny the search engines to access your site and you can also restrict general people to view your contents.

As mentioned earlier, there could be several reasons behind putting the site offline. Such as -

  • You can restrict search engines to crawl your site. Because you would like to decorate your site first. In that case you can limit search engines' access.
  • You may need to make your site unavailable temporarily due to political violations or religious issues.
  • Or may be the site could be a private one. Maybe it's subject to be unavailable to the public.

Whatever the reason, or even if you don't need to put your site offline, at least you should know the way. Some bloggers even think, why I put my site offline? When I'm trying to cirulate the site as much as possible? I've already mentioned the reasons! :)

Restrict Search Engines Crawl your Site

You can limit search engines' access to index your site if necessary. Follow the steps below -

  1. Go to Blogger Control Panel/ Settings/ Dashboard.
  2. Choose Settings from the left pane.
  3. Select Basic > Basic > Privacy.
  4. Choose No for both options as below.
  5. Hit on the Save Changes button.

 Privacy Option in Blogger Blog

The first No doesn't matter much. But the second No matters! If you choose No in the second option, your site will not be crawled by search engines. But everyone will be able to access your site.

Restrict Public Access to your Contents

If your site is private and you don't want people view your contents, then you can absolutely restrict public access. Follow the steps below -

  1. Go to Blogger Control Panel > Settings.
  2. Choose Basic under the Settings option.
  3. Find the Blog Readers option under Permissions section.
  4. Here you have three choices: Public, Private (Blog Authors), Private (Selected Persons).
  5. If you choose the second option, only blog authors will be able to access the site. Other people will just get a message - This is a private blog
  6. If you would like to add some readers, then choose the third option. Then add readers from your contact list or you can type their emails. Whenever they try to access your site, they have to log in.
  7. Finally, hit on the Save Changes button.

Tips!

If your site is totally new, then you can use the Privacy option only. You can stop search engine crawl your site. Because search engines will not find enough contents in a new site. That's why it's better to write first. Then you may let search engines to index your site. But you can keep your site Public.

Later I will discuss the same thing for WordPress site.

How to Disable Blogger Redirection to Local Domains?

How to Prevent blogger from redirecting to country-specific url

If you're running a blog in blogger platform, you should notice, sometimes your site is redirected to local domains. I mean your site is redirected to country specific URL. But it doesn't happen in all countries. Maybe 15 - 20 countries have their own blogger domain. But Google will implement the local domains for blogger blogs in other countries very soon!

Let's give me an example:

You know the URL of Marks PC Solution is - http://munnamark.blogspot.com
  • If you're Italian you will see my site's URL as- http://munnamark.blogspot.it
  • A Canadian will see my site's URL as -  http://munnamark.blogspot.ca
  • An Indian will see my site's URL as- http://munnamark.blogspot.in

Okay fine! Blogger has its own local domains for different countries. But what's wrongwith this country specific URL? There are a number of problems:
  • Your social stats (+1, Likes, Tweets) may fall dramatically due to the variations in domain.
  • Your search ranking might be affected.
  • If blogger is banned in a country with the help of local domain, your site can't be visited from there!
Though Google says, they are trying to minimize the negative consequences of hosting blogger. But why are you waiting for Google's effort? You can force local domains to redirect to .com version of your site with a simple code!

Prevent Blogger's from Redirection:

Officially Google never mentioned any permanent way to stop redirecting. But it said if you type /ncr just after the domain name for example- http://munnamark.blogspot.com/ncr, then it will not redirect to your local domain.

And if you want to do this for individual post then it should be like that:
http://munnamark.blogspot.com/ncr/exaplepage

Anyway, as a blog master your shouldn't let the visitors follow any boring way to prevent redirection. Because you can control the redirection by the code below! Okay let's try:

  1. Make sure you're signed in to your blogger's control panel I mean design or dashboard.
  2. Now go to the template option. (Backup your template if necessary)
  3. Click on Edit HTML. Now you can see the code of your template.
  4. Hit on the template box and Press Ctrl+F to enable search within the code box.
  5. find the <head> of your template and then copy the code below and place it just below the head tag. (Look at the image below)
  6. Save the template. Done!

<script type='text/javascript'>
var blog = document.location.hostname;
var slug = document.location.pathname;
var ctld = blog.substr(blog.lastIndexOf(&quot;.&quot;));
if (ctld != &quot;.com&quot;) {
var ncr = &quot;http://&quot; + blog.substr(0, blog.indexOf(&quot;.&quot;));
ncr += &quot;.blogspot.com/ncr&quot; + slug;
window.location.replace(ncr);
}
</script>

Prevent your blog from redirecting by a simple code

From now and then your visitors will only be able to visit the .com version of your site. I mean like that: http://munnamark.blogspot.com.

You can also test whether it works or not. Type http://munnamark.blogspot.it in your browser. But it will redirect you to http://munnamark.blogspot.com. Also check this for your site.

Removing the Code:

I don't think it is necessary. For any reason, if you are reluctant to use this code, follow the steps above again. And then at the 5th step, delete the code and save your template. Or if you have a backup of your template, you can also restore it. But deleting the code is much easier.

What about the Registered/ Custom Domain?

If you blogger blog is registered I mean if you have a custom domain like .com or .org you don't need implement this code. Because the redirection is not applicable for a site with custom domain.

What happened if blogger is banned in a country?

Naturally when blogger is banned by the Govt. of a country the visitors from that country will not be able to see your site. But they will be able to visit the .com version of your site by  using /ncr just after the domain. But if you use the above code in your site, visitors will automatically be able to visit your site!

I think now you understand the importance of using this code . . . :)

Full Tutorial on Blogger Comment Optimization

Comment PNG Icon

In my very last post, I talked about word verification in blogger blog. Reducing spam comment was also discussed there. Today you're getting a full tutorial on optimizing comment option in blogger. What you should do and shouldn't do in Comments setting will be discussed today. Enjoy . . .

The aim of this tutorial is:
  • To make your blog's commenting process easier
  • To keep your blog free of spam
  • To make your visitors engaged with your site

Make sure you're signed in to your blogger account. Go to the Settings option from design or dashboard. Click on Post and Comments. Go to the Comments area. Now do the following:
  • Comment Location: By default the location is embedded. You shouldn't change this to Full page, Pop up or Hide. Visitors like embedded comment box. This will appear just below your post.
  • Who can Comment?: There are four options: Anyone, Registered User, User with Google Accounts, Only members of this blog. Choose the second option. I mean Registered User. Default setting is Anyone. But it allows anonymous users to comment on your site. To be honest, anonymous comment has no value. Anyone can comment by hiding his/ her ID. Even you can comment on your site anonymously. And it is not possible to track who is the person actually.
  • Comment Moderation: You can choose either Never or Sometimes. But choosing moderation always may not be good. In that case someone may comment again and again and thought something is wrong with your site as his/her comment doesn't appear. I suggest you to choose Never. If you find any spam comment then you can manually delete them. Besides blogger has an automatic spam filter. So, don't worry.
  • Show Word Verification: Default setting is Yes. But I recommend you to use No. If you're interested to know more about Word Verification then read this.
  • Show Backlinks: This is not very important. You can choose either Hide or Show. If you choose Show then a link will be shown under the comment box- Create a Link to this Post. Then if someone click on this link he or she will get a link of the current post.
  • Comment Form Message: This is up to you. Not very important. If you wanna give any message for the commentator you can write it here. It will be shown just below the comment box. For example you can write any advice or rules regarding comment. You can say HTML link is allowed. Or you can say spam comment is strictly prohibited etc.

Also have a look at the image below. Just try to make your comment option as the box shows:

Blogger Blog Comment Option Image

Few Suggestions for you:
  • Most of the cases commentator would like to create backlinks on your site. Allow them. Keep it mind that they comment on your site costing their valuable time
  • When the comment is too much irrelevant or only for the purpose of creating links then never remove it immediately. The first thing you can do is to request the commentator to make the comment relevant. If he/she doesn't change then you can remove his/ her comment.
  • Always check your spam box. You will find it under the Comment just below the Pages option in the left pane. If any normal comment is detected as spam then choose not spam for this comment.
  • Sometimes you might notice few spam comments are not detected by spam checker. In that case you can mark these comments as spam

One final thing you should know- Showing strictness with the commentators is a very bad thing. If you misbehave with the commentators you will lose engaged users. Always value the visitors and their comments. Because they are actually your customers.

Suppose a visitor comes your site only for creating links. Never show hostile behavior with him. There are many sites for creating links. But he picks your site. It's your credit. So why do you show hostility. What is the guarantee that he will not be a loyal user of your site in the future?

How to Disable Word Verification (Captcha) in Blogger Comment

Captcha

By default blogger blogs are designed to show word verification when visitors comment in a post. Though this is a very useful tool to avoid spam, but real users often get bored by this option. Besides blogger has an automatic spam checking tool. So you can remove the word verification option from the comment in order to let your visitors express their opinion easily.

While commenting on blogger blogs or other websites you may face a word challenge. And this is a very common thing. Specially when you open any online account. Sometimes words used in the verification option are too hard to guess. And users are very annoyed with this.

Captcha in Blogger Comments

Look at the image above. When you comment on blogger blogs or someone comments on your blog he/she will face a challenge like this. Normally this option doesn't show any hard challenge. But sometimes they are also difficult to guess. Users have to try this again and again. If they are annoyed they will loose interest to express their opinion.

Since blogger has its own spam detection technique, you can remove it from your blog. Instead of showing captcha you can allow only registered users to comment on your site. That means you can disallow the anonymous visitors to write comments.

To Disable Word Verification:
  1. Make sure you're signed in to your blogger account.
  2. Go to the Settings from the left pane.
  3. Now hit on Post and Comments option
  4. Move to the Comments option.
  5. Find Show Word Verification. Select No.
  6. Hit on Save Settings
From now users will not face any verification while commenting on your site.

But there is a problem too. If you remove or disable captcha from comment option then you may notice too many spam comments. Even after blogger checks the spam. Here you can use another technique.

To Avoid Anonymous Comments:
  1. Go to the Settings.
  2. Then move to the Post and Comments option.
  3. Look at the Comments section.
  4. Who can comment? Select- Registered User.
  5. Now hit on Save Settings

This is very easy. Even you don't need to write the full post. Just look at the image below. You just need to set your comment options as the image shows below:
