Irresponsible, Reckless Facebook . . .

Facebook is a social disaster

At the end of 2013, I termed Facebook as Social Cigarette! Believe it or not - it's true! And my statement is being more logical day by day. If the current trend of Facebooking (In all aspects) continues, then the Internet world will be one more step closer to cancer! With around 1.4 billion active users (and ever growing) Facebook (and all other concerned parties) should do something to save the web world . . .

I don't know how to start this post or how to end. Thousands of issues are related here which can't be expressed by a single blog post. I would like to start with some of the attributes of Facebook -

  • Irresponsible
  • Reckless
  • Unsafe

Risk Factors Related with Facebook . . .
  • Spam/ Virus/ Malware/ Scam
  • Hacking
  • Privacy Issues
  • Racial/ Political/ Religious Aggression
  • Unwanted/ Heavy Advertising
  • Information Leak
  • Explicit Contents
  • Poor Security System

List of Reckless Activities by Facebook

  • Displays too much advertisement on user profiles, pages and groups.
  • Shows irrelevant advertisements on profiles or pages.
  • Shows explicit/unpleasant ads to the users.
  • Doesn't justify advertisers' ads before displaying it and thus users get trapped.
  • Influences people to promote their page contents through advertising.
  • Recommends unwanted sponsored contents to the users.
  • Prohibits other companies from like and share business but when Facebook does the same thing through money then it is legal.
  • Doesn't take necessary steps to stop spreading virus, spam and malware related contents.

These are just examples. There could be more than 100 issues that may be included in this list.

Beware of Phishing!

Phishing is one of the most effective and simply way to steal your password. Suppose you see a post on Facebook that says -

Get 5000 likes immediately. Sign in to the following site with your Facebook username and password. You must have at least 2000 friends etc. etc.

Whenever you get something like that, your first task should be to report it. And never sign in to that page with your Facebook username and password. If you sign in by mistake, immediately change your password. Because the phisher will get your email and password if you sign in there!

Beware of Spam Post

Another embarrassing issue is spam post. Suppose you've noticed that one of your friends liked or shared an explicit video, image or any attractive content. If you just hit on this, the next task will be automatically done!

This embarrassing content might be shared with all of your friends, groups or pages. And it may bring you dishonor. Even you may not notice the fact until any friend informs you about it!

What does Facebook do?

Sorry to mention that, Facebook has no time to monitor these issues. Even they don't remove the contents that cause social/ political/ religious aggression. Know why?

Because these contradictory issues bring more visitors there. And their Ad Revenues increase!

Facebook can share its revenues with the people. Like Google AdSense, Facebook can also share its revenues with the profile owners who have millions of followers. But it just consumes revenues.

Complete Tutorial on Facebook Open Graph

Facebook Open Graph for Web Developer

Facebook Open Graph allows you to use custom site title, URL, description and even a custom image when you share your page. If you use Facebook Open Graph code on your site, every time when you share any page, it will be counted directly for your home page. Suppose, if I share the following URL on Facebook -

http://www.markspcsolution.com/2014/09/complete-tutorial-on-facebook-open-graph.html

The sharing/ like will be counted for -

http://www.markspcsolution.com/

But If there is no open graph code on my site, the sharing of the first URL will be counted individually. And the sharing will not be counted for your home page. Now I guess, you've understood the importance of open graph. It's really helpful to increase facebook likes of your site rapidly.

Couple of days ago, I discussed about how to claim a site on Facebook. Following the same method, you can place Facebook Open Graph code on your site. Open graph code is as follows:

<meta property="og:title" content="Site Title">
<meta property="og:description" content="Site Description">
<meta property="og:type" content="Content Type">
<meta property="og:url" content="http://www.example.com/">
<meta property="og:image" content="Custom Image Link">
<meta property="og:site_name" content="Your Site Name">
<meta property="fb:admins" content="Your Numeric FB ID">

You have to place the above code in the head (<head> </head>) section of your site's HTML. The code must be placed before closing head tag - </head>.

Facebook Insights Meta Code

Now follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Facebook Insights > Domain Insights > Add your Domain
  2. Type your home page URL > Copy the Numeric FB ID > Keep the window open
  3. Go to your site's code or HTML and find the closing header tag </head>
  4. Place the above code before closing header tag
  5. Now back to the Facebook Insight Page
  6. Hit on the Get Insights button
  7. Now you should be able to see your domain under the Domain Insights section

There are 7 meta properties in the above code. You have to change in the content option.  Make sure you've used them properly. I'm gonna clarify the points -
  1. Site Title Example - Marks PC Solution.
  2. Site Description - What's your site about. Example - Your Ultimate Choice for Computer, Internet, Blogging, SEO & PC Troubleshooting Tips!
  3. Content Type - Website/ Blog/ Article/ News etc.
  4. Site URL Example - www.markspcsolution.com
  5. Custom Image - Upload your desired image in a server. Then simply copy and paste the link here. You can use postimage.org to upload image.
  6. Type your Site Title here. Example - Marks PC Solution.
  7. Numeric FB ID that you've got from the 2nd step in Facebook Insights Page. You can also find numeric by this method

Marks PC Solution Custom Image

Troubleshooting

If you face any problem after implementing the code on your site, you can take help of Debugger. Here you can paste your site URL and debug the errors. You can check whether all properties are functioning normally or if there is a problem.

Remember, you can omit some properties. If you use Custom Image, then it will be same for any link of your site. So you can also use a shorter version of the code as below:

<meta content='Website' property='og:type'/>

<meta content='http://www.example.com/' property='og:url'/>
<meta content='100002127563096' property='fb:admins'/>

It will do the same job for you. You can also use multiple Admin IDs. Simply add more numeric IDs in the admin property.

Facebook - The Social Cigarette!

Facebook - The most popular site of the world with more than 1 billion users. If Facebook were a country it could be in the third place- Just next to the China and India! And within next few years hopefully Facebook will exceed the population of China. Currently Facebook is the strongest online media.

Why people use Facebook? Why they waste or pass their idle time or even working time on it? Why they can't go a single day without it?

The answer is Addiction

As the chain smoker smokes cigarettes one by one just for bad habits, many Facebookers waste their time on Facebook without any break. You may browse Facebook at most 2/3 hours a day. But spending more than 6 hours on Facebook is not a good sign at all.

I'm not a serious critic of Facebook or Facebookers. I'm just anxious about the future of the earth. Few factors are responsible to create imbalance. And Facebook is one of them. By the name of social networking site, Facebook is leading to social imbalance! Should I explain? Let's start -

  • Leading to Wars: Within less than a decade of launch, Facebook has already led to several national wars. The wars occured in Lebanon, Libya, Egypt are all accelerated by the Facebook communities in those countries. When the Governments of those countries tried to stop the opponent parties, Facebook communities went against Governments.

  • Spreading Aggression: A very common news throughout the world. But this is Facebook which is spreading racial, cultural and religious aggression among different communities. Sometimes a person of different values attack others directly through Facebook comments and posts. And this is the starting of endless aggression!

  • Slow Down Productivity: Facebook is banned in many offices and educational institutes. Survey reports show that, many people waste half of their working time on Facebook! As it can also be visited from Mobile devices, people keep it open all the time.

  • Hackers' Target: Your Facebook ID is the hackers' target! Because it is easy to hack. Though Facebook authority has already increased security, but hackers are smarter. They can easily beat you as well as Facebook. Anytime you can lose your account. You may be able to recover it. But within short time, they can steal your sensitive information.

  • Privacy: A very very serious issue of today's world. You're an smart user of Facebook. You use secured connection of Facebook, sign out of Facebook every time, use secured password etc etc. But when one of your FB friends lose his account then what? Your chat records as well as sharing are there! Then how can you ensure your privacy?

  • Detrimental to Health: Excessive use of something is always bad. Same rules apply to Facebook. When you're using Facebook, you can't do other tasks. Maybe you use Facebook sitting on a chair. And certainly this will have a negative impact on your physical fitness. Know more . . .

  • Mental Instability: Facebook is great for creating new friends. It can also help you to find your old friends. But it creates distance among existing friends! Boys and girls often fall in love through Facebook within moments! And some of them break up within few days. Sometimes your status, likes and comments may lead to serious conflicts among your friends. Divorce, Suicide, Attempt to Murder are very common incidents.

  • Family Crisis: This problem usually belongs to so called modern families or modern countries of the world. When all the members of a family use Facebook then it is very easy to arise family crisis. Suppose a husband may communicate with his ex wife. Or a wife may communicate with his ex husband. And a husband may not accept his wife's friend request due to privacy problem. Even the crisis may grow between the children and parents. Parents may send friend request to the children. But they may not accept their requests. Few days ago, an Indian husband forget to change his marital status on Facebook. Consequently his wife divorced him!

  • Fraud and Cheating: This is a very common problem of Facebook. Millions of people are being deceived by Fake IDs every day. Some of them are losing money. Some of them are losing privacy. Even some people are losing their IDs by sharing  passwords with wrong people!

  • Unnecessary/ Irrelevant Ads: For their own betterment, Facebook show ads on people's pages. Sometimes irrelevant and stupid advertisements are being shown on profile. Which may look odd. Sometimes you will see the ads of different products and manufacturers' ads. Sometimes Facebook forces users to like pages, join groups, share posts which are very irritating.

  • Millions of Traps: Millions of traps are always trying to hunt you. Anytime you can caught by those traps. Suppose you get a link from your friend which says- See who have unfriend you, or See who have watched your profile. Never click on such links. Remove them as spam. If you even click on these links, it will be automatically shared with your friends and groups.

  • Spam/ Virus/ Malware: This is a very common suffering for the web users. But Facebook is the land of cultivating virus, spam and malware. Spam or virus may take the form of a link or even could be normal image. Whenever you click on it, you're . . .

  • Criminals' Weapon: Facebook is becoming a popular medium for blackmailing and threatening day by day. A criminal can easily go to a Cybercafe with his fake ID. And he can easily threats a person. For example, he may get your sensitive information. It could be a video, audio, image or text which belong to you. And which are capable of damaging your honor. He may demand monetary or other benefits from you instead of sharing these on Facebook. Even after you fulfill his requirements, he may share those things on Facebook.

There are only few problems discussed here. Millions of problems are being generated by Facebook everyday. Don't know how to get rid of these. A shortcut way to avoid problems is to use Facebook only when it is necessary.

How to Add Facebook Like box on Website or Blog

Facebook Like Box by Marks PC Solution

If you have a Facebook fan page or an official Facebook page of your blog or website, then you can place it in your site. Certainly this will ease your interaction with visitors or fans. Another issue you should keep in mind that it is also a part of SEO. Placing a like box may attract visitors to visit your site!

Earlier I wrote about how to create a pop out like box in your site. And also discussed how to create Facebook fan page. Remember: You must have a fan page to create a Facebook Like Box. If you don't know please read this first:

If you're ready then I can start. Read carefully.

To add a like box in your website or blog you have to place two codes in two different places. These are as below:

Code 1: Place this code on your page once, just after the opening <body> tag. If your site already has this code then you don't need to place it again.

<div id="fb-root"></div>

<script>(function(d, s, id) {
  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];
  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;
  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;
  js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1";
  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));</script>

Code 2: Place this code on your page wherever you want the plugin to appear on your page.
<div class="fb-like-box" data-href="http://www.facebook.com/markstips" data-width="240" data-height="350" data-show-faces="false" data-stream="false" data-header="false"></div>

You know, the second code is the main code. And the first one is just to help the second one. If your HTML has already the first code then you don't need to paste the code again.

Customization: The Red Parts of Code 2
  • Name: The word markstips should be replaced with your page name.
  • Width: Current width is 240. You can increase or decrease.
  • Height: Current height is 350. Change it if necessary.

Tips: Try to place the second at the footer of your page. It will be helpful to load the site faster. Not only this code, you should place any Java Code at the bottom. If more java codes are placed at the header it will dramatically affect your site's loading time

Implementing the Code on Blogger:

Code 1: Template > Edit HTML > Proceed > Now find <body tag by pressing Ctrl + F > After few lines paste the code from code 1 above > Save. If you placed any code like it earlier then you don't need to paste again.

Code 2: Layout > Add a Gadget > HTML/ JavaScript > Copy and paste the code from Code 2 above > Save

Now view your blog or refresh it. You will be able to see this within few seconds. If the server is down, then the like box may delay to appear on your site. Until then, keep waiting.

Advice: If you don't think the like box not important for you, or if you think it consumes your site space then you can try this one: Pop Out Facebook Like Box.

If this code is not working properly, or if you face any problem to implement the code, then try to make the code directly from Facebook Developers

<div class='sbutton' id='gplusone'><script type="text/javascript" src="https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js"></script><g:plusone size="tall"></g:plusone></div><div class='sbutton' id='su'><script src="http://www.stumbleupon.com/hostedbadge.php?s=5"></script></div>

<div class='sbutton' id='digg' style='margin-left:3px;width:48px'><script src='http://widgets.digg.com/buttons.js' type='text/javascript'></script><a class="DiggThisButton DiggMedium"></a></div>

<div class='sbutton' id='rt'><a href="http://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" >Tweet</a><script src='http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js' type="text/javascript"></script></div>

<div class='floatbutton' id='linkedin'><script src="//platform.linkedin.com/in.js" type="text/javascript"></script><script type="IN/Share" data-counter="top"></script></div>

<div class="sbutton" id="reddit"><script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.reddit.com/static/button/button2.js"></script><!-- AddThis Button BEGIN --><div class="addthis_toolbox addthis_default_style "><a class="addthis_counter"></a></div>

<!--SideBar Floating Share Buttons Code End--></div></div>

If everything is correct then you will be able to see a vertical floating share bar at the left side of your blog.

Customization: This code will give you the opportunity to customize as you like.

Add or Remove Button: You can add or remove button from this code. Notice that each code starts with <div class and ends with </div>. For your convenience I've separated the each code. If you wanna remove one or two codes then just delete the part of the code. When you wanna add something to this code make sure that the new code starts with <div class.

Position: At the beginning of this code you might notice a text like this- #pageshare {position:fixed; bottom:15%; left:3px; float:left;. Now, if you wanna place it to the right side then type right in the place of left. And you can also increase or decrease the size of the button if you are somewhat expert in coding.
