8.00 GB (4.89 GB Usable) Solved!

Corsair 8 GB DDR4 RAM

Well this is a very common issue for the Windows users. Often you may experience this sort of problems. On your computer properties you may notice only 4.89 GB of RAM usable out of 8.00 GB. Or 3.41 GB usable out of 4.00 GB.

If the difference is not very significant then I suggest you not to take any action. Suppose if 7.86 GB is usable out of 8.00 GB then it's pretty okay. No action needs to be taken at this situation. Cause those portion of RAM might be used by the system hardware.

Windows 10 Computer Properties

But when the difference between installed RAM and usable RAM is too much then you must find out the reason and take necessary action to resolve the issue. Otherwise you can't get the optimum performance.

Tips: You can check your system properties by simply pressing Start + Pause. Or right click on My Computer/ Computer Icon and choose Properties.

Probable Reasons
  • You're using 32 bit version of Windows.
  • The Mainboard/ Motherboard can't handle the amount of installed RAM.
  • Your system is very old and BIOS version is also old.
  • The unusable portion of RAM is reserved by hardware.

Note: Windows XP and Windows 7 Starter Edition can't use more than 2 GB RAM. So if you're using 4 GB or 8 GB there, then it's nothing but waste. Also remember that the later editions of Windows (32 bit) can use maximum 4 GB of RAM. Windows 7 Pro & Above (64 bit) versions can handle up to 192 GB of RAM if supported by your Motherboard.

What to Try
  • Check System Configuration: If you have a new computer with updated version of 64 bit Windows then this is the main reason of less usable memory. Press Start > Type msconfig > Hit Enter > System Configuration window will appear on the screen. Then go to Boot > Advanced Options > Unmark Maximum memory if it's checked. Now restart your PC and hopefully the problem is fixed!

Boot Options in System Comfiguration

Boot Options in System Configuration

  • If the above method doesn't work, then you should check the capacity of your motherboard. You can get this information from manufacturer's website. If your motherboard has a limited capacity of using RAM i.e. (2 GB or 4GB) then your system needs to be updated.
  • Or you can try updating your BIOS version. But don't try to do this if you're a normal user.

Hope this will solve your problem. If the problem continues then don't hesitate to contact Marks PC. I'll be available at your service . . .

Clean your System Unit (CPU)

System Unit Maintenance

Dust is a crucial factor in your CPU service life. Accumulation of excessive dust may reduce its performance and even damage it fast. And you know it's little tough to purchase a new system. That's why cleaning the system unit is an important task for an user.

Couple of weeks ago I clean up my system unit. And I also captured the pictures of my system. Today I'm gonna share my experience with you.

Why Dust is Harmful?

We know dust is very harmful for human. But what's wrong with computer? Isn't it a machine. Yes it is.

But you should know your CPU Main Board, RAM, Processor and other devices produce heat. And to be worked properly this heat should be released. But if there is too much dust in your system unit, then mother board and other devices can't release the heat properly.

If you leave your CPU uncleaned for a long period then it will be damaged soon or you may experience a reduced performance.

How Many Times it Needs to be Cleaned in a Year?

Well it depends. If your CPU is in a dusty place then I recommend to clean in every 03 months.

If your place is less dusty then you should clean it 02 times in a year. And if the place is very neat and clean, then you can go for cleaning once in a year.

Or you can simply open the cover and check how much dust is accumulated. If it looks like my CPU, then you should clean it immediately.

Get Ready with the Necessary Tools . . .

  • Wear Mask
  • Wear Gloves if necessary
  • A Blower (if available - not essential)
  • Two Paint Brush - Small & Medium
  • Star Screw Driver
  • A Magnet (To avoid the loss of any screws)
  • A Piece of Soft Cloth
  • (Be careful about your eyes)

Now you're ready to go for cleaning . . .

FIRST PHASE

  • Turn off your PC if it's running.
  • Disconnect the power.
  • Unplug the USB Cables and other Power Cords from CPU.

Now keep your CPU in a open space. Put it over a mat to avoid any scratch in its body. Now gently clean its outside (CPU Case) with the soft cloth.

SECOND PHASE

  • Open the case by removing screws.
  • Look at the inside and inspect the scenario.
  • Use blow machine to remove dust (if you have)
  • Use the medium size paint brush to clean dust. Gently brush the main board, CPU Fan, Power Supply, Hard Disk etc. Use cloth to remove them.
  • Use the thin paint brush to clean the narrow places.
  • Again use the blow machine (if you have)

THIRD PHASE | Handle with Care - Experts only!

(Use magnet to loss of any screw)
  • Remove the RAM
  • Remove the ATX Cable
  • CPU Cooler has four screws. Each screw has plastic cover. Turn the screw heads as directed by arrow. Now pull each screw carefully. Open the power connection of CPU Fan and finally remove it from main board.

  • Remove the power supplier from the casing.
  • Again use blow machine to clean each part separately. Or use your paint brushes to clean each of them properly.
  • Make sure you've completely removed dust from your main board.
  • Don't try to open the power supplier box if you have no previous experience. It's little complicated. And any time there is a chance of disconnection of small cables. So, be careful.

Make sure the mother board and other devices are properly cleaned.

FOURTH PHASE | Assembling

  • Install the Power Supplier First. Make sure the screws have been inserted properly. Otherwise it may cause unpleasant noise while running the computer.
  • Insert the ATX cable properly. You must hear a click sound.
  • Insert the RAM in the slot. Make sure you've got a click sound.
  • Before inserting CPU Fan over the processor, you can apply a thin layer of Thermal Grease if available. It's good for you cooling system.
  • Turn the plastic heads of CPU Fan's Screws in opposite direction. Now push each of them one by one. Every pin will make a click sound if inserted properly.

Make sure everything is installed properly. Check whether any screw left in the magnet. Now insert the CPU cover. Insert the cover screws.

Insert all the cables properly and then power on your machine.

Precautions

I must say, this is not a game of child. There are some risks associated. You need to handle with care to avoid any accident. Improper handling may cause you injury and your machine might be damaged as well.

Safety first! If you're not experienced enough, then don't try these all. Simply open the CPU cover and use blow machine. If you do this once in a month then you don't need to do the above tasks.

Serve your machine and it will serve you . . .

Transcend - The King of Flash Drives

Transcend USB JetFlash

Very often, I face a common question - which flash drive should I purchase? Or which flash drive do you use? Or which flash drive is faster? Considering a number of factors, the answer is Transcend and always. Transcend is a brand which I can trust and recommend to others. It's the king of USB flash drives!

Flash drives you know are the most commonly used devices for offline file sharing. When we share a movie, large software or documents we usually use USB Flash Drives or Micro SD Cards. If you need to transfer the files faster and your drive is slower, definitely it kills your valuable time.

Transcend 64 GB Pen Drive Pack

If you want super speed, then you must go for USB 3.0 Flash Drives. But your device may not have supports for this. In that case, you will get only USB 2.0 features. And some brands will charge you too much. So, I always prefer Transcend considering the following factors:
  • Speed
  • Actual Storage Capacity
  • Compatibility
  • Durability
  • Warranty
  • Price

To be honest, the speed varies with the models. But I can assure that you will get at least 7/8 MB write speed (per second) in any transcend flash drive. Though the speed depends on what type of file you're transferring. And the read speed will be at least 20 MB per second.

In terms of capacity, Transcend is great. All of you know that, the actual capacity of any memory device is less than the stated capacity. Some brands will give you too less space. But a 16 GB Transcend flash drive will give you at least 15 GB storage capacity.

Though it's not a unique feature, still I would like to mention that, Transcend is compatible with any hardware and any software wherever the USB flash drive is supported.

More than 6 years ago, I purchased a 2 GB Transcend USB Flash Drive. It's still functioning smoothly. Transcend's flash drives are really durable.

Transcend gives lifetime warranty for its flash drives. I'm not sure but it could be product lifetime warranty. You can register your product through Transcend's website and check the status of your warranty.

Couple of weeks ago, I purchased a 32 GB flash drive. In my currency, it costs me $ 15. And I think the price is quite reasonable.

Supports & Services

Supports and services are not same for all types devices. You can check Transcend Support page to see what supports are available for you. There is a list below for you:

  • JetFlash Online Recovery: With this tool you can recover your device when something goes wrong. While running this operation, you must be connected to the internet.
  • Product Verification: You can verify your product through Product Verification page. Simply go to the Product Verification page and check whether it's original by entering serial number.
  • Product Registration: You can register your product through Product Registration page. To register your device, you must have an account on Transcend or sign up for a new account through Email ID.
  • Compatibility: To check your device compatibility, go to the Compatibility page.
  • Where to Buy: Transcend flash drives are available anywhere. Have a visit to this page for choosing your purchase location.
  • Warranty Service: Maybe your dealer will deal with Transcend for warranty service. If you don't have such facility, you can directly contact Transcend for Warranty Service.

Marks PC Got a New CPU!

Finally I've got a new system unit! I purchased the CPU in April 02, 2014. I was very busy with transferring my files from old PC. So I didn't get enough time to write about my new CPU. In this post I'm gonna share my experience with you. And I also would like to give you some tips which you can follow before and after buying a new PC.

In fact, I'm suffering with my old PC for more than a year. It shuts down without notice. And there is no definite pattern of shutting down. Actually the parts are 5.5 years old. So I didn't think about repairing. I've purchased a new system unit.

I would like to start with my CPU configuration:

  • Processor: Intel Core i3-3220, 3.3 GHz (4 CPUs), 3MB Cache
  • System/Mainboard: GIGABYTE H61M-S2PV, LGA 1155 (Ultra Durable)
  • Memory: Team Elite 4GB DDR3 RAM with 1600 Bus Speed
  • Hard Drive: Samsung 1 TB HD 103SM
  • DVD Drive: HP DVD Writer 1265
  • Casing: San ATX Casing (E011B) with High Watt Power Supply

After assembling the CPU, the seller asked me to power on the system. I pushed the power button but it didn't run! Then he checked the connectors, power cords and everything. My father was there. He advised to check the power switch.

Then the seller used reset switch to turn on the system. And it worked! What happened actually? There was a fault in the power button. After changing the internal connector of  the power button, it worked fine.

Total Cost is approximately $ 340. 3-year warranty for Mainboard and CPU. Product lifetime warranty for RAM. Hard Disk and DVD writer get 1 year warranty.

Here is my system rating

Windows 8 System Rating

Now I'd like to discuss what to do before and after buying a new PC.

Before you Purchase - Think
  • What do you do using PC?
  • How much heavier your tasks are? Gaming, Graphics or Official Tasks?
  • How much you know about configuration? Are you an expert or novice?
  • Do you have a familiar PC shop which you can trust? How much expert they are?

Before buying a PC, you must think about these questions. You should also think about warranty. Because computer equipments could be damaged any time. Even best quality product can't guarantee that it wouldn't be damaged. But a good brand can ensure warranty service.

You must think about your activities before purchasing a PC. What type of PC you should buy depends on your tasks. Heavier tasks like graphics, gaming requires a heavier system. But if you only browse Internet and work with Microsoft Office, then dual core PC with 2 GB RAM is enough for you.

If you're expert about PC, then it's okay. But if you're just a beginner or don't have much idea about configuration, then you should talk to an expert. Or at least you can talk to a friend who has a good idea.

Finally, choose a better outlet from where you will buy the computer. Never choose a shop which offers low price PC. I swear, you have to suffer with defective parts. Just tell the seller one thing - I need a quality CPU. Price doesn't matter. Because some sellers cut the price to match your budget. And often they give you poor quality parts to reduce the price.

You must also ensure that you will get warranty for important equipments like Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Hard Disk etc.

When you Purchase - Observe

When you're at the purchase point, you should observe the assembling procedure. Make sure that, the person assembling your CPU is an expert. Otherwise equipments could be damaged due to the wrong handling.
  • Be sure that every equipment is new. Check the packet before opening an equipment. Make sure that the product is properly sealed in the packet with sticker. If the seal is broken, inform the seller and ask him to give you a new one.
  • Check the installation of processor. Make sure that, CPU fan is properly installed.
  • There are usually 06 points in a motherboard. Make sure all of them are properly inserted into the casing.
  • Be sure that internal connectors are properly connected.
  • Check the USB ports with a flash drive if possible and necessary.
  • Any loose connections may be the cause of danger. So be sure, there is no loose connections.
  • When the assembling is complete, turn on your system properly. And make sure everything is working perfectly.

Before leaving the shop, don't forget to pack your equipments properly. Take the necessary documents - warranty papers, money receipt etc. Take the CD/ DVDs that come with the products. Ask the seller for any advice that can increase your computer life so that you shouldn't come back for warranty!

After you Purchase - Ensure Proper Maintenance

A computer could be a machine. But it needs proper maintenance just like a human body. And you must take some precautionary measures to avoid any occurrence. Here are some tips for you:
  • Place the system in a cool and dry place.
  • Keep the surrounding area clean to keep the dust minimum.
  • Use Voltage Stabilizer and UPS to avoid any damage.
  • Connect the cords using a good quality multiplug.
  • Place the CPU in a way so that it doesn't touch any other object ie. walls, tables or any other electrical equipments.
  • Perform maintenance tasks at a regular interval.
  • Clean up your PC properly. Or take help of an expert.

Understanding the Parts of a Keyboard

Different Parts of a Keyboard

Most of the computer users are confused about the parts of the keyboard. Sometimes users can't distinguish among the different parts. However you can operate your PC without understanding the parts of a keyboard.

Graphical user interface lets you operate computer using mouse. Most of the commands are now performed by mouse. And the advent of touch screen could be the reason of the departure of keyboard! But real PC users can't leave it. I'm capable of typing up to 70 words per minute in normal keyboard. But in touchscreen, I simply hate typing. :(

Anyway, today I'm gonna discuss about the parts of a keyboard. I was searching information to write this post for few weeks. And I've been able to collect sufficient information. And now I am sharing with you.

Don't be confused! I'm not talking about mini keyboard. Here my concern is normal keyboard.

Look at the image below:

Different Parts of a Keyboard

The parts of a keyboard are clearly outlined here. Each part has seprate color. So you will have no problem to identify the 05 basic parts of your keyboard. Indicator lights are also shown as a part.

  • Typing/ Alphanumeric Keys: It consists of letters (Q to Z), numbers (1 to 0), symbols (<, >, #, @, *, &, $ etc.) and punctuations (?, :, ;, !, etc.).  These keys are normally used for typing. But sometimes typing keys are used to give command if these are used with control keys.
  • Control Keys: These keys are used to perform different actions. And can be used alone or in combination with the other keys. Commonly used control keys are Ctrl, Windows Logo Key, Alt, Esc etc.
  • Function Keys: Function keys are located at the top. Yeah I'm talking about F1, F2, . . . . F12. These kes are used to perform specific tasks. The function of these keys vary from program to program. While booting for an Intel Main Board, pressing F1 will take you to the BIOS settings. And in most of the Windows Programs, F1 will take you to the help dialogue window. F2 will let you rename a folder.
  • Navigation Keys: Sometimes these keys are called cursor movement keys too. These keys enable you to navigate through documents or webpages. These include arrow keys, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down, Delete and Insert.
  • Numeric Keypad: This part is great while entering numbers somehwere. These keys enable you to type digits quickly. These include 0 to 9 with +, -, Enter, Numlock etc. Mini Keyboards don't have this pad.
  • Indicator Lights: There are three indicators. One is for Num Lock, another is for Caps Lock and the other is for Scroll Lock.

Print Screen Button Tips!

Earlier Print Screen button was used to print the current screen directly. But now, if you hit on the Print Screen button, the image of your entire screen will be copied to clipboard.
  • Press Print Screen > Paste it in MS Word, Pain or Photoshop > You will get the image of whole screen there.
  • Press Alt+Print Screen > Paste it into another program > You will just get the image of your active window.
  • Press Windows Logo Key + Print Screen > Your screen will blink for a second > You will get the image of your entire screen in your picture folder.

Create New Volumes without Partition !!

Shrink Drives to Create New Volumes

Disk Management is a nice tool to manage your hard disk drives. With this tool, you can easily format, shrink and extend your existing volems. You can do some other tasks too. But today I'm gonna discuss about creating new volumes by splitting existing volumes.

Background Story

Two weeks ago, one of my acquaintances got a new laptop. It comes with Windows 8, Intel Core i5 processor and 1 TB Hard disk. Not very extraordinary nowadays. But I was really surprised when heard there is only 1 partition in his laptop!! Can you believe it? One partition for a 1 TB hard disk! My goodness - this is a thousand GB partition!

I know how to split a drive to create new partition. But didn't even try this earlier. After getting the case of 1000 GB partition, I tried to shrink a drive in my own PC. After successfully trying this on my PC, I advised him how to divide the one partition into several drives. By this time maybe he has fixed this. :)

Supported Versions:

Disk Management tool is same both in Windows 7 and 8. Windows XP may have the same advantage but I'm not sure. If XP users has any problem, you can inform be through comments.

Create New Volumes Without Partition - No Restart! No Interruption!!

Make sure you're the Admin of your PC. And right now you're logged in as Administrator. Now start -
  1. Right click on My Computer icon from desktop. (How to show My Computer icon on desktop)
  2. Hit on the Manage option.
  3. Computer Management window will appear.
  4. Choose Disk Management under the Storage option from the left pane.
  5. Here you will get the list of your volumes with capacity and free spaces.
  6. Right click on the drive you wanna shrink.
  7. Select Shrink Volume and you will get the below window.
Shink Size Before and After

Here you will get the total size before shrink. Now enter the space to shrink. Simply count the 1000 MB for 1 GB. In the image I've used 5000 MB for 5 GB. Then check how much you will have in the drive after shrink. Before proceed, make sure everything is okay.

Now Press Shrink > You will get the following image > Right click on the Free Space > New Simple Volume > Pres Next > Enter Simple Volume Simple > Next > Assign Drive Letter (Suppose L) > Format the volume (Choose format type, label) > Next > Finish.

Within few seconds, you will get a brand new drive!

Creating New Volumes by Disk Managment

How to Get it Back?

Suppose you made a mistake. Or you were just trying to do it. But don't want to divide the volume actually. How do you get the new volume back to your old volume? Very simple!
  1. Right click on the new volume.
  2. Choose Delete Volume.
  3. You will get the above image again.
  4. Now right click on your old volume and choose Extend volume.
  5. Press Next > Next > Finish.

This procedure doesn't require any restart. Even you don't need to close any program running on your PC. It's fast, simple and reliable.

Precautions:

While running this operation you should be very careful. Though this tool is safe to use, but you may lose your data for any wrong command. Suppose, you may delete a volume which contains your valuable files. Or you may format an existing partition which contains important data. So, before making a click, be sure you're really doing the right job.

Touchscreens Used with Smartphones

iPhone 5, Samsung S4, Windows Phone 8, Samsung Galaxy Tab

Basically this is a knowledge based article. It can just enrich your knowledge about display technology. And I think you will enjoy this. I'll try to provide you a brief idea about the screen technology used by the leading cell phone manufacturers.

By this time you should know there are different types of display technologies such as LCD, LED, TFT, Retina etc. But how many of you know the details of each type? To be honest, I didn't have much idea about these before reading an article in a newspaper. Then I decided to write about smartphone screens on Marks PC Solution. I've also gathered information on display technology from different sites.

TFT LCD Display (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display)

This is the most widely used display technology at present. TFT LCD technology ensures the clear view. It is better than old LCD technology to view High Quality pictures and video.

This type of display is relatively cheaper. So it can be used in low-priced phones too.

But this technology has some limitations too. You can't operate your phone in sunlight. Your display will be almost unseen when you're in daylight. And this type of display consumes too much battery. You should keep the display off as much time as possible.

IPS LCD Display (In-Plane Switching LCD)

IPS LCD is better than TFT LCD Display Technology. No matter how you wanna see it. You can get a clear view from any angle. It doesn't consume much power. That's why it saves your battery power.

Manufacturing cost is little bit higher and used with medium-priced cell phones.

Resistive Touchscreen Display (Don't Call it RTS!)

I've searched Google by RTS. Actually it has no short form. You should call it Resistive Touchscreen Display.

In this technology, there are two layers in the screen. And there is a minor gap between the two layers. Whenever the first layer get your touch, the blank space between two layers blends and pressure the second layer. Immediately the processor gets signal. Thus Resistive Display Technology works.

You can operate the phone using fingers or stylus. But using a stylus will be more comfortable.

Capacitive Touchscreen Display

If you wanna operate your phone with fingers then capacitive display is more comfortable than resistive display. As made for operating with fingers, you can't use stylus or something else to work with capacitive display.

This display ensures fast response time. Manufacturing cost is also high. This display is used with high-priced smartphones.

OLED Display (Organic Light Emitting Diode)

Most of you maybe familiar with only LED - Light Emitting Diode. More than a year ago, I wrote a post about the difference between LCD and LED. OLED is the improved version of LED technology.

OLED is a high quality display technology for cell phones and monitors. It gives you a bright look. This type of display is very light and viewing angle is excellent. It supports 16 million colors and reponse time is very short.

OLED display consumes less power and thus it saves your battery.

AMOLED Display (Active Matrix LED)

Active Matrix OLED is a display technology that is used with mobile devices and televisions. It is actually an improved version of OLED.

One of the great features of this display is the viewing capacity in sunlight. Users can see the screen in daylight without any problem. AMOLED ensures vivid picture with super sensitive screen.

As the manufacturing cost is relatively higher, this type of display is used with high end mobile devices.

Super AMOLED Display

Next to the AMOLED is Super AMOLED. It is nothing but the improved version of AMOLED developed by Samsung. This technology is used with the galaxy series devices.

Super AMOLED includes the following features:

  • Light and thin
  • Vivid Display
  • Faster Reponsive Capacity
  • Less Power Consuming

Retina Display

The most modern version of smartphone screen is the Retina Display, which is a combination of IPS LCD and Backlit LED technology. As developed by Apple, this type of display is only used with iPhone.

It is a so high resolution display that you can't see the pixels with blank eyes. That's why it is named as Retina Display.

Retina Display is very sharp, vivid and clear.

Heptic Touchscreen Dispay

Nokia and BlackBerry are using this type of display technology. This display is capable of identifying the touch accurately. Thus it enables users to work with touchscreen comfortably.

This display is reliable, comfortable and great for typing. And it's very popular among the users.

Gorilla Glass Display

Maybe you can guess something about this display. Yes you're right. This display is made for rough and tough use.

Gorilla Glass is very hard and durable display. It keeps your display out of scratch. Even it can protect the screen from hammer. Many cell phone manufacturers are now using Gorilla Glass in their devices.

Here I've just discussed about 10 types of displays. And these have many variations. If you'd like to know more then search Wikipedia.
