Get System Information by Simple CMD Command: Systeminfo !!

Desktop PC with LCD Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and Speaker

There are many ways to view your system information. But each of these ways has some advantages and disadvantages. You can't get information about all issues from a system. As a result you should know different ways to view your PC information. In this site two posts have already been published about viewing system information.

  1. DirectX Diagnostic Tool: Press Start + R > Type dxdiag > Press Enter > Get Details of your system.
  2. Speccy: A third party tool to view system information. It shows both hardware and software information. Also great for measuring the system temperature.

Another popular way to get the system information is System Properties. You can get this by clicking right to the My Computer Icon and then choose Properties. Keyboard shortcut to view System Properties is Start + Pause. But it shows only minimum information. Just Processor, RAM and System type (32 or 64 bit).

If you would like to get details about your system you must use either Dxdiag or Speccy. But today I'm gonna share something else with you! Yes, you can do it by a simple command. Let's start-

  1. Press Start + R to open Run.
  2. Type cmd to run Command Prompt.
  3. Type systeminfo hit enter and wait for 2/3 seconds
  4. Now you get the details!

Systeminfo will show the following information:

  • OS Name, Version, Manufacturer, Configuration and Build Type
  • Name of the Registered Owner and Organization
  • Product ID
  • Windows Installation Date
  • System Boot Time
  • System Manufacturer, System Model and System Type
  • Processor and its Capacity
  • BIOS Name with Version
  • Windows Installation Directory
  • System Language and Keyboard Input Method
  • Time Zone (Selected GMT Time Zone)
  • Total Physical Memory/ RAM
  • Virtual Memory: Maximum, Available, In Use
  • Others: Page File Location, Domain, Logon Server, Hotfix, Network Card etc.

Have a look at the image below to get a clear idea

System Information on Command Prompt Window

Actually, a single way to do something is not enough for a person. Every system has some exclusive advantages. So you need to know all possible ways to do any task. That's why I've presented this command to you even after there are 3 other ways to view system information.

Clean Up your PC to Avoid Overheating Problem

Fire on CPU

It's just about two days ago. I had been working on my PC for one and half hour. Suddenly the system got shut down without showing any error message! Immediately after 10 or 15 seconds I tried to power on the system. Power signal appeared but lasted for only 3 seconds. Then I pushed the switch again but same thing happened. I decided to wait for few minutes. At the third attempt I was able to turn on the system.

After turning on the system, I ran an application named Speccy, a program that shows detailed information about computer, to check the system temperature. Oh my Goodness, I was really surprised seeing the result. My room is not air conditioned and its temperature may be under 30 degree Celsius. But the system temperature was as below:

Processor               :   820 to 850
Motherboard       :   750  to 800
Hard Disk             :   500 and Above

So, what happened actually? What's the reason. Was it caused by the room temperature? No, not at all. Because only 300 temperature is nothing for a PC. Actually the problem was dust. Yes, I haven't open the PC case for more than a year. And I didn't clean it up for a long time. CPU Fan, Motherboard and all other parts of the system unit was under dust!

So I opened the case and cleaned it up properly. After cleaning up the system the temperature was as below:

Processor               :   550 to 600
Motherboard       :   550  to 580
Hard Disk             :   450 to 500

This looks quite normal. Isn't it?

It's been more than a year when I wrote a post about Computer Maintenance: Extend Your PC Life. Of course it applies only for Desktop PC.

Many beginner level PC users report that- My PC gets restarted after running for a few hours. One of the prime reasons for this problem is Overheating. Sometimes it might be caused by virus. In other cases if your Windows is not genuine, then it may be restarted automatically by Windows itself.

Now, I would like to discuss how to clean up the system unit of a desktop PC. Open the PC case. Observe the internal condition of the system- Amount of Dust. If you have a machine to clean dust use it carefully. Otherwise clean it using a soft cloth or any other cleaning materials. Make sure the piece of cloth is not wet

Gently clean the Motherboard, RAM, CPU Fan, Hard Disk Surface etc. Remove the CPU fan if possible. Then clean it properly with a brush. Unplug and plug the internal connectors with care. You should clean your PC in that way 2 times a year.

Precautions:

While cleaning the system, keep in find the following issues:
  • Never rub the surface of the Motherboard with pressure. Because it consists of numerous connections that look like zigzag lines.
  • Make sure the tissue or cloth you're using is not wet.
  • The cloth should be as soft as possible.
  • Unplug and plug the internal connectors properly. Never blend any pin.
  • While rubbing by the side of a capacitor, make sure you're not pressuring it. If any of the capacitors breaks down then you get a lot works to do . . . !

Whatever you do, do it with care. If you are not capable enough, then take help from expert.

32-bit Vs. 64-bit Windows: Remove your Confusion

What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows

Windows has two types of operating systems running currently. Many of you are already know about them. One is 32-bit and another is 64-bit. In this post I would like to discuss about them. After reading this post you will know about the following issues:
  • What type of operating system you're currently running (32 or 64 bit)
  • What is the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit windows
  • What is the advantages/ disadvantages of 64-bit OS
  • Problems regarding application software, hardware drivers caused by the OS type

Is your Windows 32 bit or 64 bit?

If you know your system type then it's okay. But if you don't then follow any of the system below:
  • Right click on My Computer/ Computer Icon > Choose Properties > Then Look at the System Type > It could be either 32 bit (x86) or 64 (x64) bit
  • Or, Press Start + Pause to open Properties Window. Then check it.
  • Or, Press Start + R > Type dxdiag > Look at the Operating System > System Name with bits will be available there.

Difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows:

One of the basic differences between the 32-bit and the 64-bit version of Windows relate to  the handle of primary memory or RAM. A 64-bit version of Windows operates RAM in a different way than a 32-bit Windows does.
  • 32-bit Windows can't handle more than 4 GB RAM. But a 64-bit Windows can manage up to 128 GB RAM!
  • A 64-bit version of Windows can process a larger volume of data compared to 32-bit version of Windows.
  • A 64-bit version is more secured than 32-bit version of Windows.

Advantages of 64-bit Version of Windows:

  • More Processing Power
  • Greater Performance and Accuracy
  • Improved Security
  • Ability to Address More RAM (Up to 128 GB)
  • Ability to handle heavier programs (Video Editors, Graphics Design Applications, High Resolution Games etc.)
  • Most importantly, 64-bit version of Windows is great for multitasking!

Disadvantages of 64-bit Version of Windows:

  • Compatibility Issues of Hardware Drivers
  • Consumes High Volume of Hard Disk Space and Memory
  • Compatibility Issues of Application Software

Factors to be Considered While Choosing System Type . . .

  • Do you work with heavier programs like Illustrator CS6, Video Editor or High Resolution Games?
  • Is your processor 64-bit? (Press Start + Pause to check)
  • Do you have the 64-bit version device drivers for all of your devices?
  • Are all of your necessary application software have 64-bit version or they compatible with 64-bit OS?
  • Do you have more than 4 GB RAM installed on your PC?

If the answers are yes to all the above questions, then you can easily install a 64-bit version of Windows on your PC. If you're confused then have a try. If you feel problem, then get back to the 32-bit version. (Even I don't use 64-bit OS yet due to the compatibility problems).

Still Confused? Remove your Confusion . . .

  • A 32-bit OS will work fine with 64-bit processor.
  • A 32-bit application will be compatible with 64-bit OS.
  • But a program specifically compatible with 64-bit system will not run on 32-bit OS.
  • A 16-bit application will not run on 64-bit OS.
  • A device driver designed for 32-bit OS will not work with 64-bit OS and vice versa.

Hopefully, after reading this post, you have a good idea about the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. If you're still confused you can comment below. But my suggestion is- have a try both the system. Definitely you will gain practical experience.

Best of Luck. :)

Why Pen Drive/ Hard Disk Space Shows less than Stated Capacity

Why pen drive capacity shows less than stated capacity

You may often get confused about the storage capacity of your hard disk or flash drives. A 160 GB Hard Disk shows only 148 GB. A 30 GB hard disk partition shows only 29.2 GB usable space. A 8 GB pen drive shows at most 7.56 GB storage capacity. But why the stated capacity of the drive can't be usable? Read the full post. This is our today's discussion.

Few days ago my 8 GB Apacer Brand Flash Drive gets damaged. Its capacity was 7.44 GB. I went to the vendor and submitted this to get a replacement (if possible). And also purchased a new one (Same Brand). But this time I'm really disappointed. Though its stated capacity is 8 GB, it shows only 7.2 GB usable space. 800 MB less capacity.

As the price gets half the quality follows the it. Two years ago I purchased that pen drive costing $12. But 5 days ago it takes less than $7. Well I'm afraid. I'm anxious about the service life of the new pen drive.

Let's back to the discussion. Our discussion is about the actual usable capacity vs. listed capacity. And why actual space is always less than stated capacity.

There are 3 different reasons behind it:
  • Different operating systems treat your disk differently. Windows OS may not show the disk space like Linux, Mac or Unix. There are little discrepancies between the file formats and algorithms used by different operating systems. (It doesn't matter much)
  • Another reason is that- A portion of memory space is reserved for system files and data sector for better performance. This is the primary reason behind the less usable space than the mentioned space.
  • The last reason but not the least is the calculation method used by the disk manufacturing companies. They consider 1 KB = 1000 Bytes. But your OS may consider it as 1 KB = 1024 KB. Here you are also losing a considerable amount of disk space.

Look at the calculation below:

Virtual Storage              Disk Storage

1 MB = 1024 KB                      1 MB = 1000 KB

1 GB = 1024 MB                      1 GB = 1000 MB

8 GB = 8192 MB                      8 GB = 8000 MB

7.2 GB = 7372 MB                   7.2 GB = 7200 MB

So, you are getting 172 MB less space because of using 1 KB = 1000 Bytes!

Now what do you think? Shouldn't the manufacturer mention the actual usable memory on the packet? :)

How to Change the Size of Virtual Memory/ Paging File

PNG Image of RAM, Virtual Memory, Main Memory

In my previous post I talked about virtual memory. Today I'm gonna discuss about how to change the size of virtual memory. Before starting the main discussion I would like to say something about virtual memory again. But I recommend you to read my previous post about virtual memory.

A part of your hard disk space is used to support or accelerate the operations of your PC. This part is know as Paging File or Virtual Memory. When the amount RAM is low, it is virtual memory that supports RAM to carry out its activities. The term Virtual Memory and Paging File are used interchangeably.

By default Windows sets a virtual memory on your PC. Sometimes it may not be accurate. Or it may not be in the way that you would like to set. In that case you can change the size of virtual memory.

For example:
  • You may need to increase or decrease the size or virtual memory
  • You may like to change the drive for virtual memory etc.

Before starting the operation, check the amount of RAM installed on your PC. Right click on My Computer > Properties > Check the RAM

Or type dxdiag in the Run option. Read more

You can change the size of virtual memory as:
  • Increasing the Size (Keep it equal to the size of your RAM)
  • Or Decreasing the Size
  • Or setting No Paging File (Not Recommended)

Whatever you wanna do, follow the steps below:
  1. Press Start + Pause/Break to open System. Or right click on My Computer and hit on Properties.
  2. Now, Windows XP user should find the System Tab. And Windows Vista/ 7/ 8 user should go to the Advanced System Settings.
  3. Here a new window appears named System Properties. Go to the Advanced Tab of this window.
  4. Hit on the Settings located under the Performance section.
  5. Go to the Advanced Tab and click on the Change button.
  6. Now select the drive where you wanna set the virtual memory or paging file. (Use Drive C)
  7. Select the Custom Size. And look at the below of this Window. Minimum Allowed, Recommended and Currently Allocated. I suggest you to use the numeric value shows in the Recommended.
  8. Look at the image below. Recommended is 2039 MB. I used 2039 MB both in Initial and Maximum size. You should also set an amount that shows in the recommended.
  9. Type the recommended value both in Initial and Maximum size. Then hit on the Set button. Then hit OK > OK > OK.
  10. Restart your PC if required.

Increase or Decrease the Size of Virtual Memory and Paging File

Short Instruction:
Start + Break > Advance/ Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Settings under Performance > Advanced > Change > Custom Size > Type your required amount of virtual memory both in Initial and Maximum Size > Set > OK > OK > OK > Restart.

After setting the virtual memory, you will see a file named pagefile.sys in the drive where you set the virtual memory. If you set the size of virtual memory 2 GB, then the size of pagefile.sys will be 2 GB. That means your hard disk space will be compensated. So, never set this unnecessarily high.

Caution: You can choose no paging file from the step 8. But deleting or disabling the paging file is not recommended!

What is Virtual Memory and Why it is Necessary?

Today's computers are so powerful that users are not concerned or informed about virtual memory. Actually they don't need to! Because most of the modern computers comes with sufficient main memory or RAM. It may be 2 GB or more. And a PC with higher than 2 GB RAM hardly requires to use virtual memory.

A minor part of your hard disk is used as Virtual memory. Generally Windows OS automatically uses some space of your installation drive (In most cases Drive C).  You can change the amount of virtual memory by yourself.

If you're running a program that requires a huge amount Random Access Memory, and if your computer lacks sufficient memory, Windows uses virtual memory to run that program.

In fact, virtual memory is used to boost the capacity of RAM and to accelerate the operations of your computer. It combines the RAM with temporary space on your hard disk. When RAM is low, virtual memory transfers data from RAM to a space named Paging File. Transferring data to paging file frees up the RAM to perform its task.

The more RAM you've on your PC, the faster you can operate it. So, if your PC is slowing down due to the lack of RAM, then you should increase the amount of virtual memory by compensating a part of your installation drive. This part or virtual memory will be used  by Windows as RAM.

But increasing the virtual memory is not the ultimate solution. Because it is not as fast as RAM. And your PC can't read data from hard disk as quickly as it can read from RAM. So adding RAM is a better solution.

What is the Difference between LCD & LED Monitor?

Couple of years ago, giant monitor manufacturers declared that CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors will no longer be available in the market as it consumes heavy power produces low quality output and most importantly better technology is available I mean LCD Display.

CRT Monitor was the only one choice of customer for a long time. Then LCD overthrows it from the market. But LCD's time was too little. Within a very short time another technology that is LED has arrived and the time of LCD is almost finished now.

Many people are often confused with the two terms - LCD and LED. As they look same, both are thin and smart so many people can't make a difference between the two. In this post I wanna clarity the difference between the two.

LCD Vs. LED Monitor: Basic Difference
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
LED (Light Emitting Diode)

LCD and LED monitors are based on the same basic technology for image display, but differ in case of back-lighting technology used. While LCD monitors use cold cathode fluorescent lamps for backlighting, LED monitors use light emitting diodes. This is the prime difference between the two display technologies.

So, to be honest, LED monitor is the improved version of LCD.

LCD displays have to rely on external lighting, as their display is created through manipulation of light, passing through polarized liquid crystals. The back-lighting affects picture quality substantially and light shed by LEDs offers superior picture quality, compared to LCDs.

This is because LEDs offer much more gradation in intensity and a larger light wavelength spectrum, giving a truer color quality. These types of monitors offer a better dynamic contrast ratio too. So if you compare LED vs. LCD monitor for gaming and other intensive graphic applications, LED monitor is surely better choice, as they provide vivid and more natural colors, with better gradation.

One of the basic problems of LCD is that it can't display true black color. But LED can produce true black color by entirely switching off LED.

LED is somewhat slimmer than LCD.

LCD Vs. LED Monitor: Power Consumption

LED is a very recent as well as latest technology. They are preferred over LCD Monitors due to its overall high quality and less power consumption. It consumes much less power than LCD to operate.

LED monitors consumes as much as 40% less power than conventional LCD monitors.

LCD Vs. LED Monitor: Durability

LED Monitors are Eco-friendly as mercury is not used in their production. Since LED produces less power output over time, so they are more durable than LCD monitors.

LED Vs. LCD Monitor: Cost

This is the one and only factor that holds back LED Technology. I mean the LED monitors are little bit costlier in compared to the LCD monitors. The difference is also not so high. However, the cost gap is lowering gradually with time as the demand for the LED is increasing.

Note: Most of the today's laptop producers use LED display. And almost all laptops' screen are now built with LED technology!

Convert Drives to NTFS without Formatting!

Convert Drives into NTFS without Formatting

Often you may need to convert your hard drives from FAT/ FAT32 to NTFS. If you have to convert all drives of your PC, then it will be really difficult for you to back up your files. Because, in order to convert drives, you have to format it.  And in that case you may need to set up the whole computer. But there is an easy option for you to do this job. And you don't need to format your drive. Even you don't need to back up your files!

Okay let's start -
  1. Open Notepad
  2. Copy and paste the following code in the Notepad
title Marks PC Solution!
convert c: /FS:NTFS
convert d: /FS:NTFS
convert e: /FS:NTFS
convert f: /FS:NTFS
convert g: /FS:NTFS
convert i: /FS:NTFS
convert k: /FS:NTFS
msg %username% NTFS Converter: Presented by www.markspcsolution.com!
      3. Save the file as NTFS.bat

Look at the drive list. I've used C, D, E, F, G, I, K. If your drive letters are different just make change in the drive letter. And if you need to omit something, just delete it.

Suppose, if you need to convert only C Drive then you don't need to write the following lines in notepad.

title Marks PC Solution!
convert c: /FS:NTFS
msg %username% NTFS Converter: Presented by www.markspcsolution.com!

If your desired drive letter is L, then type convert l: /FS:NTFS. By this way you can convert any other drive into NFTS.

Note: If you wanna convert from NTFS to FAT32 then you need to format it. So before converting to NTFS, make sure you really wanna do this. Otherwise you need to format the drive to back to the FAT file system.

DirectX Diagnostic Tool: dxdiag

dxdiag logo

Sometimes you may need to analyze your system configuration. If your PC gets damaged and needs to take it to the service center then you should check the system configuration. Unfortunately if the experts of service center are dishonest then they might change your system. For example you have 2 GB RAM. They can replace it with an 1 GB RAM. Your Processor may be Dual Core. They can replace it with a Pentium 4 processor.

With DirectX Diagnostic Tool you can see the detailed information about the hardware and drivers installed on your system. You can view the system manufacturer, system model, processor capacity, RAM, DirectX version, Video Card, Sound Card and so many.

To open DirectX Diagnostic Tool, simply go to the Run by pressing Start + R, then type dxdiag and hit enter. Now a Yes/ No option may appear. Just hit on the yes button. Now you will see a window named DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Dxdiag System Information

Well in this window you can see several options ie. System, Display, Sound etc.

  • System: In this tab you will find the Name of your PC, Current Date and Time, Operating System, Language, System Manufacturer, BIOS Version, Processor Type, Amount of Memory (RAM), DirectX Version etc.
  • Display: Next to the System Tab is Display. Here you will get the Name, Manufacturer and  Memory of your Display Driver or Graphics Card.
  • Sound: You may notice 2 or 3 tabs about Sound. How many tabs you will see depends on the system and hardware you're using.
  • Input: It shows how many input devices are connected with your PC. 2 most common inputs are mouse and keyboard. Any additional input devices should appear here.

Lost your Motherboard CD? Simply go to the Manufacturer's Web Site!

Every motherboard manufacturer and most of the other device manufacturers provide a driver CD for the hardware to make it compatible with Operating Systems. Except some plug and play device such as Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Speaker most of the other devices have a driver CD.

But in case devices like printer, scanner, webcam, sound card, graphics the driver is essential. Even some modems don't work without external driver.

At least 20 to 30% people lost their driver CD due to their carelessness! And when they re install the OS they lost sound and graphics options! And try to find a CD here and there. And unfortunately driver CD are not same for different models of devices.

But it is very simple to recover the lost CD! You can find it from the manufacturer's website. For example, if you lost your HP Laptop's Driver CD, just visit www.hp.com. And Search by writing the device name and model in the search box.

Here are some of the common websites that may be helpful for you:
1. Intel
3. HP
5. Asus
6. Canon
7. Compaq

After visiting this sites, you may find several pages like Download, Help and Support, Support & Driver etc. You can either go this pages or simply search in the search box by entering the product name and model.

How do you know what is the name your system manufacturer?

This is also a common questions. Go to the run (press Window Key + R) and write dxdiag. Then hit the enter button. If a Yes/No Option appears hit on the Yes button.

Now you will see a Window named DirectX Diagnostic Tool. You will find the details of your PC from here.

Under the System Tab you will find system manufacturer name. This is your motherboard.
Under the Display Tab you will find the graphics manufacturer name.
Under the Sound Tab, you will find the sound manufacturer name.
