Facebook Introduced Post Search Feature!

Facebook Search Improves

Couple of days ago, I was typing something on Facebook search box. And a notification appeared as - Now you can search posts! I was really surprised. Immediately I tried the feature and it was very useful. With this option, you can find any posts that you've seen before on Facebook.

Recently, Facebook has improved it's search option. Earlier, we could search for People, Pages or Groups only. But now the users can also search for -

  • Posts
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Links etc.

Note: Photos or videos can be found by the words used with them while sharing.

How to Search for Posts/ Videos/ Photos?

Suppose you need to find something on Facebook which you've seen before. It could be either a post, photo or video. Remember the words which were used with it.
  • Now type the words in Facebook search box.
  • Don't press Enter. Click on the search icon of the search box.
  • Now you will get the following view -

Facebook Search Options

Look at the above image. There are options like posts, people, photos, pages, places etc. Try them one by one until you get your desired post.

Also remember, you may get several results for a single item if it's shared in different groups or pages.

What Does Facebook Say about it's Search?
  • Find the people and posts that matter to you most.
  • Find any post you've seen before on Facebook.
  • Explore the world through the eyes of your friends.
  • Find old friends - and new ones, too.

Concern for Other Search Engines!

Google or Bing is already capable of searching Facebook posts. If you search something on Google which is already shared by someone on Facebook, Google will show that Facebook page in search result.

But as there is an improvement on Facebook Search, Google may loose some traffic. Many tips and tricks, news, tutorials are now being shared on Facebook Groups, Profiles of Pages other than blogs or websites. And naturally people may start searching something on Facebook since it enables the users to search for posts!

And what, if Facebook starts a complete web search engine in the future? Mr. Google - Beware!

Convert Webpage into PDF by Google Chrome!

Print PDF using Google Chrome

Often you may need to save a webpage for future use. There are different ways you can follow to save a webpage. Such as - directly copying texts, printing, saving as PDF etc. But in most of the cases, you may not get a satisfactory output. If you're Google Chrome user, I can guarantee that you will get a much better printing option . . .

Google Chrome Print Window

Google Chrome has a nice printing option other than Windows Default Print Dialogue. Here you will get a preview of the pages which you wanna print. But if you use the system dialogue, there will be now print preview option.

Google Chrome Print as PDF

This feature was not available in previous versions of Chrome. So, before you go, you must upgrade to the latest version of Google Chrome. Google chrome also support cloud printing. I will talk later about it. Now let's start -

  1. Make sure your Chrome is up to date.
  2. Now open a webpage that you wanna save as PDF.
  3. Press Ctrl+P and immediately you will get a Print option on the left and Print Preview on the right.
  4. At the top you will get the number of pages. You can choose printer from Destination option. Hit on the Change button to choose a printer. Select Save as PDF to create a PDF copy of the current webpage.
  5. Then Choose Pages - Select All or enter page number.
  6. Choose Paper Size & Layout. You can also customize the Margins if necessary. Select custom margin and drag the margin to fix your margin size.
  7. Choose the Options - Select whether the Headers & Footers, Background Colors & Images will be printed or not.
  8. Finally, hit on the Save*/ Print button to save your document as PDF or print using a printer.

* If you save as PDF, you must choose a destination.

Google Talk is Gonna be Shut Down!!

Google Talk Logo

Few days ago, I just signed in to Google Talk and got the following message -

Google Talk app for Windows is no longer supported. It is being replaced by the new Hangouts Chrome app. Install the Hangouts app from http://goo.gl/yglfk6.

It's my post number 400! I'm really sorry to publish a bad news in this post. But I promise, in post number 500, I will try to write something exceptional. I've already got the idea for that post!

I was really surprised and shocked after getting this message. To chat with my friends and blog visitors, most of the time Google Talk is my first choice. I don't like chatting in Gmail because it's heavy and slower.

Google is trying to promote its Hangout app for Android, Mac and Windows operating system. They are also trying to move the Internet world to Google Chrome. That's why Windows users can't use Hangout without Chrome. Hangout is installed as a Chrome extension which is really bothering.

But I think Google Talk was a really smart tool to communicate with people. Google could develop the app instead of shutting it down. And some of the Google Talk features are not available in Hangout. In slower connection, you may need to fight to connect to the Hangout. It's really frustrating.

Last year Google announced that - Google Talk app for Windows is being retired. And from this month, Google Talk users are getting the following message from gmail.com:

Google Talk Chat Box

Now Google is offering the Hangout app. It's a cross-platform application. You can get this tool from:

Google Hangout PNG Logo

Hangout looks smart but I think some changes are necessary. Think about file sharing. Google Talk users can share files but this feature is not available on Hangout. Of course you can share images through Hangout. And it also allows you to draw something in chat window.

Google Hangout Screenshot

You can still use Google Talk. But time is very short - maybe two months at best. And then Google Talk will be turned off forever! :(

How to Get Facebook Numeric ID?

How to Find Numeric Facebook ID

Whether you're using Facebook or Google Plus, you have an unique numeric identity number. If you're a Google Plus user, you must notice a number in your profile URL unless you haven't got a username from Google. But Facebook automatically gives you a username after opening account. And thus your numeric ID is hidden from Facebook Profile URL. But you may often need to use the numeric ID of your Facebook account.

If you are an apps developer, or using social plugins for your site, you may need to use your numeric ID. Today I'm gonna share an easy way to find out the numeric ID of your Facebook account.

In this way, you can find any person's profile ID number and Facebook page ID number. Follow the instruction below:

  • Go to this URL - http://graph.facebook.com
  • And type your username as - http://graph.facebook.com/username
  • For example - http://graph.facebook.com/jolley.roberts

Now you will get the following details -

"id": "100004080544971", "first_name": "Jolley", "gender": "male", "last_name": "Roberts", "link": "https://www.facebook.com/jolley.roberts", "locale": "en_GB", "name": "Jolley Roberts", "username": "jolley.roberts"

As I mentioned earlier, you can also look up your page ID number. Suppose, the Facebook Fan Page of Marks PC Solution is -

https://www.facebook.com/markstips

You have to type http://graph.facebook.com/markstips to get this page ID. And this page will show you the following details:

"id": "550920454928744", "about": "Your Ultimate Choice for Computer, Internet, Blogging, SEO & PC Troubleshooting Tips!", "can_post": false, "category": "Computers/internet website", "checkins": 0, "has_added_app": false, "is_community_page": false, "is_published": true, "likes": 109, "link": "https://www.facebook.com/markstips", "name": "Marks PC Solution", "parking": { "lot": 0, "street": 0, "valet": 0 }, "talking_about_count": 1, "username": "markstips", "website": "http://www.markspcsolution.com", "were_here_count": 0

There are many other sites where you just need to submit your username and they will show you the details. But sometimes, if their server is down, you may not be able to use them. And there is also a little chance to get trapped by phishing sites! So, I think, using the graph is better.

I'm familiar with a site which you can trust - Find your Facebook ID. In this site, you have to input your username. Then hit on the button - Lookup Numeric ID. Finally, it will display your name along with the numeric ID.

Report Suspicious Sites to Google Spam Report

Google Spam Report

At the beginning, web technology was operated by the people who were committed to keep it safe. They were dedicated to build such a communication network that will turn the world into a Global Village. But there is a negative site everywhere. Some people always try to abuse the technology. They use technology to harm other people and thus try to get some personal benefits. What do you call them - Hacker, Spammer or simply Criminal?

Google is trying to prevent the webspam. And you have a great opportunity to contribute to build a safer web along with Google Spam Report! Recently Google Webmaster Tool has introduced a new page through which you can report 10 types of suspicious site under following categories:
  • Paid Links - Page that sells or buys links
  • Objectionable Contents  - Page that contains inappropriate contents
  • Malware - Page that is infected
  • Other Google Products - Page that abuses AdSense, Google Maps etc.
  • Something else is wrong - Page that is not webspam but has some other issues
  • Report Webspam - Page which is really webspam
  • Copyright and other legal issues - Page that violates copyright
  • Personal/ Private - Page that discloses private information
  • Phishing - Page that asks for sensitive information like username, password etc.
  • Rich Snippets - Page that violates Google's Rich Snippet guidelines

Google defines webspam as - the pages that try to trick Google into ranking them highly. And before you file a webspam report, you should decide which of the above categories best describes the page.

If the page has multiple identifiable issues, I think you should report the site which will punish it more!

Here I would like to illustrate some practical situations -

Copying Contents

If someone is copying contents from your site, you can report it to the Copyright and other legal issues category. And you must be the copyright owner. Or you can also report the site in Other Google Products category if that site uses Google AdSense Ads.

Link Sharing Site

Some sites share too much links. If you found a site which is primarily selling or buying links without providing services to the people, you can report that site under paid links. Users find it difficult to use the site due to the numerous links.

Sites Sharing Malware/Virus

Some sites have downloadable contents. And often they share virus or malware. If you found a site that shares virus or malware, you can report this site in Malware category.

Redirecting Sites

These sites are really boring for the users. Wherever you click on these sites, a pop up window may appear. Or you maybe redirected to another unwanted page. These sites could be reported in different categories. But I prefer Something else is wrong category.

Site Revealing Private Information

Privacy has been a great concern now. Often we see, some sites reveals secret information about different individuals which is against privacy. If you found a site which discloses your personal information or someone else, you can report it in Personal/Private category.

Sites asking passwords, username etc.

Some sites may ask your Facebook username or password to sign up or log in. Or they may want your Google username or password. Or they may ask for any information which they are not supposed to do.

Sometimes you may find a fake site which exactly looks like a popular site. Suppose Facebok instead of Facebook. Or Goggle instead of Google. They are known as phishing sites. If you ever sign in to these sites by mistake, change your password immediately. Because you may loose your account anytime.

If you found a phishing site, please report it in the Phishing category. It's popular method to hack someone's account.

Really Webspam

If you found a site which contains wrong information, exchanging links, copying contents from others, too much posts within a few days, misguiding the readers, redirecting the visitors to unwanted sites - in a word Massacre - you can report this site in Really webspam category. You may find all sorts peculiarities there!

Misleading Sites

Some sites mislead the usres. Suppose you search something in Google and found a site appropriate for your query. But after visiting the site, you've understood that this sites doesn't contain your desired contents. But it provides wrong information in Google search result. You can report this site in Rich Snippets category.

These sites use such a description in the search result, that influences users to click. But when the visitors enter the page, they don't find necessary information.

If you think, the contents of a site is not appropriate, then you can report it in Objectionable contents category. Or if you fails to decide the proper category, then use Something else is wrong option.

The last thing I would like to tell you, I personally hate Phishing, Spamming, Copying and Malware sites. What do you hate most?

Create Short URL by Google URL Shortener

Shorten URLs by Google URL Shortener

Shortening URL is a great way to share large URLs. There are many free URL shorteners. Even some shorteners (ie. AdFly) offer revenue to the users. But I simply hate them. Because it bores people. More than two years ago I wrote about Tiny URL. But do you know, Google has a shortener too?! Let's try . . .

Follow the above link and you will get the following view:

Google URL Shortener Service

Now copy and paste your desired URL in the box and hit on the Shorten URL button. Immediately you will get a short URL in the right side.

Remember, if you are not signed in to your Google account, you have to enter captcha. But if you're signed in, you don't need to type captcha and a list of short URLs create by you will be  kept in your account. You can also view the number of click on those short URLs!

In the list of short URL, you will get detailed analysis of each URL. How many clicks from where, which browser, which operating system etc.

For Example:

This is my site's URL - http://www.markspcsolution.com/

This is short URL - goo.gl/H4ydU2

Have you noticed, just 06 characters after goo.gl. Previously it was only 05 characters. Whatever the size of URL, you will get a small URL.

Suppose, the URL of this post is as below -

And the short URL of this is here - goo.gl/sK1ylX.. . And it's really short!

When someone clicks on the short URL, he will be redirected to the main URL within a very short time. When you're sharing a large URL via mobile text, it could be difficult for you to type when the copy paste option is not available. But you can share short URL anytime, anywhere. :)

Note: All goo.gl URLs are public and can be accessed by anyone.

Quantify your Site by Quantcast

Quantcast - A Great Tool for Audience Measurement

Hello bloggers! Hope you're doing fine in blogging. Today I'm gonna write a review on Quantcast. Actually quantcast is a great site for audience measurement tool. You can collect huge information through Google Analytics. But I think Google Analytics is too heavy and sometimes it's really difficult to use. In that case, quantcast is more comfortable and convenient for the webmasters.

Quantcast is also capable of showing the real time situation of your site worldwide! Yes! Just like Google Analytics, quantcast can fetch your real time visitors through world map. Thus you can see who is in your site right now.

Do you use Web Rank Toolbar? I've found quantcast from Web Rank Toolbar. Earlier whenever I opened Web Rank Toolbar in Iron Browser, I saw my site is not ranked by quantcast. Because quantcast only measures your site when you set up its code in your site.

Then I implemented quantcast code in my site and get it quantified! See the current status below:

Or you can directly visit quantcast to check the status of Marks PC Solution. Hit on the  quantcast image button:

Quantcast Large Logo

If you would like to qantify your site, follow the method below:

Open a new tab in your browser and type -

https://www.quantcast.com/markspcsolution.com

Just replace the red part of the URL with yours. Now go to this address. Check your site's rank if available. And also look upper right corner. You will see - Not quantified. If your site is already qantified then you will see Quantified button.

How to get Quantified?

In order to get quantified, you must have an account with quantcast. I know most of you have no account qith quantcast. First open an account there and follow the steps below.

  • Look at the right panel - Add a Website. Hit on it.
  • A new window named General Tag will pop up.

How to Download a Part of YouTube Video?

Download a Part of YouTube Video using Clip Converter

Most people download the whole YouTube video even when he needs a small portion of that video. And certainly this wastes huge amount of data as well as valuable time. But you can easily cut an YouTube video and download only the part you need out of a large video!

Background Story

Couple of weeks ago I was searching for an old Bengali song on YouTube. But it was not available in the largest video sharing site of the world! Fortunately, I got the full movie instead of the song. And that movie is 2.5 hours long. What should I do now? Download the full movie for a 5-minute song? Even the 3gp format of this movie is over 400 MB. When the song is only 12 MB.

Though I know hundreds of different ways to download videos from YouTube, but I never think of downloading a small part. Then I googled to find out a way. And you will be happy to know that I got something there! Today I'm gonna share how to download a part of YouTube video instead of full video.

Clip Converter: Free Online Media Recorder

Actually I'm gonna talking about a site which will do the cutting process for you - Clip Converter. With the help of this site, you can -
  • Download & Convert Videos into MP3, MP4, 3GP, AVI etc.
  • Cut and download a specific portion of the large videos.

Instruction

First of all, you need to find your desired video from YouTube. Then open that video and copy the URL from the address bar. You can close YouTube to save your bandwidth. Now follow the link below:

Paste the video link in Media URL option and hit on the Continue button. After hitting the Continue button, this site will be looking for necessary information of the video ie. screenshot, filename etc.

Clip Converter Conversion Format

Now if you simply wanna download the video, without cutting or converting, choose the download format from available options ie. MP3, MP4 or 3GP. Then hit on the Start button. You will be redirected and wait for a few seconds to get the Download button. When the Download button appears, download the video.

Downloading the Part of a Video

The procedure is almost similar to the previous one. You have to enter the video URL and then choose a download format ie. 3GP. But you need to choose conversion options here as follows:

Clip Converter Conversion Options

Here I choose 3GP format. When you unmark the options Start of Video and End of Video, you will be able to cut the video. But you must know the exact time of the part you wanna download. Now enter the starting and the ending time of your video as HH:MM:SS. Then hit on the Start button and wait for the download button to be appeared. As soon as you get the download button, you can download your specific part of the video!

Note: Always load this site completely. Otherwise some button could be missing and you may not be able to see the Download button.

Remember, there are several large download buttons in this site. Never click on these download buttons. Because these are Ads only. Only use those buttons which shows in my screenshots.

How to Sign out of Gmail Remotely?

How to Sign out of Gmail account from a remote location

Your email account is as important as your cell phone. Even sometimes it's more important than a cell phone. Because it may contain lots of personal as well as official information. Once hacked, it could be really tough to get back. So, you should keep your email ID safe and secured. Today I'm gonna discuss about how to sign out of Gmail from a remote location.

Background Story

When I was in college, during my graduation, I used to sign in to my Gmail account from Computer Lab. And I used to select the Remember me option for quick login. One day, when I was working in my Gmail inbox, the electric supply interrupted. And I didn't have enough time to wait. So, I had to leave my account signed in to that browser.

I was not sure whether the next user would get my account signed in or not. I was lucky that I didn't save my password. Otherwise anyone could see the saved password and access my account.

However, there was nothing to worry about! Because Gmail has a great way to sign out of all other sessions except the current one. And you can also change your password any time.

You may need to sign in to your Gmail account from different locations. Suppose your friend's PC, cybercafe, library, cell phones or any other public places. By mistake, if you forget to sign out, your account might be unsafe. Or if you lost your cell phone with Gmail account signed in, then what? Simply sign out of all other sessions from your Gmail inbox.

Account Activity

If you need to sign out of all other sessions, then you have to go to the Account Activity options from your inbox. Account activity is available at the bottom of your inbox. If you're using basic HTML view then you will get the account activity as below:

Last Account Activity in Gmail

Look at the red mark. Last account activity. And look at the yellow shade - Detials. Hit on the details button to view your activities. And if you're using the standard view of Gmail then it looks like as below -

Last Account Activity in Gmail

And this will be located at the bttom right corner of your inbox. After hitting the Details option, you will be redirected to a new page named Activity on this Account. Look at the image below:

Gmail Account Activity

Since my account is not open anywhere, it shows - This account doesn't seem to be open in any other location. If there is any unusual login detected, it would show different message.

Now look at the button - Sign out of all other sessions. If you hit on this button, your account will be automatically signed out from any devices/ sessions except the current one. If you're signed in into your mobile, it will also be signed out.

Also look at the Recent activity table. It shows from where your account has been accessed, with location, IP address, date/time and duration.

Hopefull this will be really helpful for you to keep your Gmail account safe. Facebook has also  similar option. You will get it from settings.
