oDesk & Elance Merged as Upwork!

oDesk Merged with Elance

Have you tried to sign in to your oDesk account recently? If you don't then try now. I think you can't visit oDesk website anymore! It will be redirected to a new site - Upwork. Just few days ago, the largest online marketplace oDesk has merged with Elance.

I got an email message from oDesk on May 06, 2015 with the following subject -

oDesk is now Upwork

At first I was really surprized! Why did they change their name? oDesk has already been a popular platform for the freelancers across the world. And they didn't mention anything about their merger with Elance. Later I got the details from the newspapers.

Last year, oDesk merged with Elance. And the name has been changed recently. But if you visit Upwork, you may not find much change in their site. Most of the options are very similar to oDesk. Your username, password, email, profile information and any other information will be remain same.

New CEO

Upwork got a new Chief Executive Officer. Stephane Kasriel is the new CEO of the company. Earlier he worked as the head of product development.

What's New

As mentioned earlier, still there is no significant change that may catch your attention. The changes will be made gradually. What is Upwork doing now is just making their site lighter and faster, developing handy apps for mobile platforms, displaying user profile in a friendly manner etc.

Mobile-Friendly Sites Get Higher Ranking!

Mobile, Smart Phone, Tablet

Few days ago, when I signed in to my Google AdSense account, I got a notification - Your site's mobile-friendliness is now considered as a Google Search ranking signal. Before that I received an email from AdSense Team with the subject - Upcoming mobile-friendliness change in Google Search, is your AdSense site ready?

Yes, Google have started applying this rule since April 21, 2015. And I've already tested my site. Marks PC Solution have successfully passed the Mobile-Friendly test! See the result below:

Test your Site's Mobile-Friendliness

I've also analyzed Marks PC Solution on Google PageSpeed Insights. That result is also satisfactory for mobile devices. Have a look -

Google PageSpeed Test for Mobile Devices

You can also test your site. Simply follow the link below:

After visiting the above link, enter your site's URL to the box. Now hit on the Analyze button to start the test. Within few seconds, you will get the result. If it says okay then you can relax. But if the test shows that your site is not mobile friendly, then you've got a lot of works to do . . .

Make your Site Compatible with Mobile Devices

How do you make your site mobile friendly depends on what do you use to maintain your site. Most of the webmasters use different CMS(s) to manage their websites/ blogs. Such as - WordPress, Blogger, Joomla!, Drupal, Google Sites, Tumblr etc.

And not everyone is expert in all these content management systems (CMS). So, I can't provide solutions except Blogger.

But there is nothing to worry about. You will get a complete Guide on Google Developers. I think this will cover most of the systems.

And you should also know, sites which are hosted by Google Sites are already optimized. You don't need to take any action. You can simply take a test

The following links will be useful for you:

Optimize Blogger Sites

If you're using Blogger, then the task is much easier for you. Blogger offers some default mobile-friendly themes. If you enable one of them, then you don't need to make any other changes!

Follow the steps below:

  1. Open your blogger dashboard.
  2. Go to Template.
  3. Hit on the Settings/ Gear icon under Mobile.
  4. Now look at the image below. Choose the same settings as exactly selected in the following image.
  5. Yes. Show Mobile Template > Choose Default Mobile Template > Hit the Save button.

Default Mobile Templates on Blogger

Now you're ready to go!

If it seems that your mobile look is very simple but you want a colorful one, then you can choose other templates available below the Default Template. And those templates are also mobile friendly. But you must take the test after choosing the template.

If you choose the Custom template from the list, then your desktop template will be adapted for mobile devices. But it may not work fine while viewing your site on a mobile device. But if you find your custom template is working fine, then you can use it.

Birthday Wish from Google !!

Google Celebrates Users' Birthday

While I'm turning into 27, I was thinking about what to write on my birthday. Cause I can't leave this day without writing a post on Marks PC. When I returned home from Office, I just opened Google home page to search something and noticed a doodle. Then I moved my mouse pointed over it and it was showing -

Happy Birthday Abdur!

To be honest, I was really surprised. Because this is the first time I've ever experienced birthday wish from Google. And I was more surprised when it comes in the form of doodle.

Google Homepage with Birthday Wish

Most of you are familiar with Google doodles. They usually appear in Google homepage to celebrate different occasions. Such as World Cup, Christmas Day, Valentine's Day etc. And if you're a Google Plus profile owner, Google will celebrate your birthday too!

Conditions

  • You must have a Gmail ID with Google Plus enabled.
  • Your date of birth must be there.
  • You must be signed into Google on your birthday.

If you meet the above conditions, then you will be wished by Google on your birthday. :)

Okay guys, no more writing today. I need to take rest now . . .

Google Talk is Terminated . . .

As declared earlier, finally, Google Talk has been terminated by Google. It's no longer supported on Windows. Google is trying to force the users to use its Hangouts app. But I've found no logical reason behind shutting down this lovely app!

In last November, I published a post - Google Talk is Gonna be Shut Down. Google said it will stop working within few months. Couple of weeks ago, I just signed in to Google Talk and got the following message -

I was just waiting to see the end of Google Talk on February 16, 2015. But even after February 16, Google Talk was working fine. From another source, I came to know that it will be stopped on February 23. But it was working after February 23.

At that point, I thought, Google Talk will be working in this way. Finally, on February 26, when I was trying to sign in to Google Talk, it shows -

Username or password is incorrect.

Though I was sure about username and password, I entered them again. Still it was showing the same error. Then I signed in to Gmail and got a message from Google -

Hi Abdur,
We noticed that you recently tried using the Google Talk app for Windows. We wanted to let you know that this was discontinued on 23 February 2015. We recommend giving Hangouts a try so that you can chat with all of your Google contacts. Hangouts supports people’s favourite features from Google Talk, including text chat, presence, contact lists and status messages. In addition, Hangouts lets you have group video chats, make phone calls, express yourself with emojis and keep your conversations going across AndroidiOS and your computer.
If messaging right from your desktop is important to you, try the Hangouts Chrome app or Hangouts in Gmail. If you’re not ready to make the switch to Hangouts quite yet, you can continue using Google Talk on Windows with a range of compatible third-party chat apps. (Please bear in mind that these aren’t Google products, so exercise caution when signing in with your Google account.)
As a loyal Google Talk user, we thank you for your support and we hope that you give us the opportunity to provide an even better communications experience with Google Hangouts.
If this sign-in attempt was not made by you, please check details on your Devices and Activity page

Check details
Sincerely, The Google Talk and Hangouts team

I think many other Google Talk users have got the same message from Google. But don't know how many of them are real user of it. In most cases, I used to contact my friends, visitors, classmates and other people through Google Talk. But now I have to keep my Gmail window open to chat with them.

What to Say about Hangouts . . .

My experience with Hangouts is not good at all. In my 150 kbps connection speed, I had never been able to connect Hangouts through Chrome. It needs at least 300 kbps speed to connect to the service!

But I have to say that Hangouts looks better than Google Talk. Google Talk was simply an instant messaging service. It was simply 1 MB in size with very simple messaging options. But with hangout, you can do lots of things.

You can share photos and emoticons in Hangouts, make audio and video calls etc. You can also draw something there. But it doesn't allow to share files like Google Talk.

Maybe Google wants the users to communicate through single app - Hangouts. That's why Google has finally turned off Google Talk through a long process . . .

Tight Policy for Adult Contents on Blogger!

Adult Content Policy Changed for Blogger

After March 23, 2015, sexually explicit or nude contents are not allowed to publicly share in sites hosted by blogger. But Blogger will allow nude contents only if it is artistic, educational or scientific. Nothing was clearly mentioned about sexually explicit text - policy changed only for images, videos and graphics.

All of you know that Blogger is one of the major blogging platforms next to WordPress. It allows us to share our personal views, opinions, ideas with the world. Above all, it's a social media. And Google is trying to punish those who are earning through sharing sexual contents.

Previous Policy

Earlier, it was allowed to share sexually explicit videos or images in blogger. And such blogs should be marked as "Adult". So that the visitors can understand that they are about to enter a site with adult contents.

Settings > Other > Adult Content? > Yes > Save Settings.

Blogger Content Warning Message

But Google has changed its policy. And certainly this is a good move to keep the web safe. I really appreciate this decision.

Changes to the Existing Blog

  • Any existing blog with sexually explicit contents will be automatically made private after March 23, 2015.
  • No content will be removed from the site.
  • Only admins, owners or registered users can access the site.

What Should the Vulnerable Sites Do?

Clean up or get out! It's simple. You've only two options open. You can either -
  • Remove sexually explicit contents from your site.
  • Or, mark your site as private.

How to Make Blogger Site Private

Settings > Basic > Permissions > Blog Readers > Choose any of the two Private options > Hit the Save Changes button.

New Offenders - Beware!

Those are still thinking of making money through creating policy violating site, please be aware! Any site (which include sexually explicit contents) that will be created after March 23, 2015, blogger authority reserves the right to delete the blog or take any other action.

Beginning of the End of Internet Explorer . . .

Internet Explorer is being replaced by Spartan

This is gonna be the goodbye message to Internet Explorer (IE) from Marks PC Solution. Released with Windows 95, Internet Explorer is still holding the position of default browser in Windows Operating Systems. After running for the 20 years, Internet Explorer is now too old to use.

Windows 10 (Technical Preview) users are still using Internet Explorer 11. But in Windows 10 Consumer Preview, Internet Explorer may no longer be available. Currently Microsoft is developing a new browser with the codename Spartan. If the codename is not changed, then Spartan will be the default browser of Windows 10.

What Does the Word Spartan Mean?

The citizen of Sparta is called Spartan. Sparta was a prominent city in ancient Greece. But I really don't know where the codename Spartan come from.

Browser Spartan Logo

Why Microsoft is Terminating the IE?

In fact, the termination of Internet Explorer is the demand of time. As I mentioned in my browser review post, Internet Explorer is losing market share to Chrome and Firefox, so it's really difficult for Microsoft to increase it's popularity.

During the last 4/ 5 years, Windows users have stopped using IE. And most of the web developers have also stopped maintaining the IE standards. That's why IE users are facing security and incompatibility issues.

When people get something new, they become interested to it. Most of the people of the web (Not Me) now love to hate Internet Explorer. That's why there is only one way open to Microsoft - Termination!

But one source said, Microsoft will keep Internet Explorer along with brand new browser Spartan.

How will be the Spartan?

Microsoft hasn't shared anything about Spartan yet. In fact, the rumor about the new browser has been spread by the tech sites. As signaled by most of the sources, Spartan will be much more different from Internet Explorer. It will enhance the user's browsing experience.
  • Much more similar to Chrome & Firefox (Not like IE)
  • Faster and lighter browsing experience
  • More convenient browsing interface than IE

What's Really Gonna Happen?

Everything we are getting about Spartan on the web are sill vague. Because Microsoft hasn't declared anything officially. And the project is just codenamed as Spartan. Just 3 days later, on January 21, Microsoft is gonna host a press meeting about Windows 10 Consumer Preview.

On that meeting, hopefully we should know something about the new browser . . . :)

Facebook Gonna Introduce Unlike Button??

Facebook Unlike Button

For last few days, it's been a big question in the world of web. Is Facebook really thinking about a dislike button? Will Mark Zuckerberg allow it? Not only the facebookers, but the whole world of web is waiting for the answers! Let's explore . . .

You know, everything shared on Facebook can either be liked, shared or commented. But there is no option to express sad feelings. Not all stories could be liked. Let me recall you the following stories -

  • The Heart-Breaking Death of 4-year Old Boy Jihad in Unsealed Deep Tube Well in Dhaka, Bangladesh
  • Taliban Attack in Peshawar School, Pakistan (145 Killed)
  • The Killing of 8 Children in Australia
  • The Capsize of Oil Tanker in the Shella River in Sundarbans (350000 Liters Furnace Oil, Covering 350 Sq. KM Area)
  • The Tragic Death of Australian Batsman Phillip Hughes
  • Rana Plaza Tragedy in Savar, Bangladesh (Approx. 1129 Killed, 2515 Injured)
  • The Missing of Flight 370 with 239 People

Wouldn't you hesitate to hit the like button when somebody shares any of the above news with you? Some people will find it totally illogical to give likes! But still many people will give like to the bad news just to share the posts with friends.

Okay I'm gonna stop talking about major occurrences. But what about these?
  • Your friend just lost his Samsung S4!
  • Your colleague had an accident last night!
  • Your brother failed in the exam
  • You've broken up with someone :(

What do you do in these situations? Or what you expect from others? Thousands of Likes??

Why People Give Likes to Sad Events?

Actually it's been a tradition. More likes mean more popularity. So when someone shares a sad but important event, people usually give likes. At the same time, they think -

If I could give a Dislike/ Unlike!

But you know, it's still impossible since Facebook has only the Like button.

What's Zuckerberg's Plan?

Zuckerberg's said -

Facebook thinking about "dislike," but maybe not through a dislike button. We need to figure out the right way to do it so it ends up being a force for good, not a force for bad.

Actually Zuckerberg is worried about the possible negative impacts of Dislike button. If Facebook adds the dislike button, there could be a disaster in the largest social network. Definitely people will start using the Dislike button heavily. And within a week, there is a possibility of Dislike war among facebookers!

Same thing happened to Facebook Friend. Facebook users can only be friends. Whatever the relation between two persons, they are always friend in Facebook. However, Facebook was able to avoid this issue. But Google Plus is very clever right from the beginning. In Google Plus, you can create different circles.

Now the people of the web are waiting to see how Zuckerberg handles the issue . . .

Facebook Introduced Post Search Feature!

Facebook Search Improves

Couple of days ago, I was typing something on Facebook search box. And a notification appeared as - Now you can search posts! I was really surprised. Immediately I tried the feature and it was very useful. With this option, you can find any posts that you've seen before on Facebook.

Recently, Facebook has improved it's search option. Earlier, we could search for People, Pages or Groups only. But now the users can also search for -

  • Posts
  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Links etc.

Note: Photos or videos can be found by the words used with them while sharing.

How to Search for Posts/ Videos/ Photos?

Suppose you need to find something on Facebook which you've seen before. It could be either a post, photo or video. Remember the words which were used with it.
  • Now type the words in Facebook search box.
  • Don't press Enter. Click on the search icon of the search box.
  • Now you will get the following view -

Facebook Search Options

Look at the above image. There are options like posts, people, photos, pages, places etc. Try them one by one until you get your desired post.

Also remember, you may get several results for a single item if it's shared in different groups or pages.

What Does Facebook Say about it's Search?
  • Find the people and posts that matter to you most.
  • Find any post you've seen before on Facebook.
  • Explore the world through the eyes of your friends.
  • Find old friends - and new ones, too.

Concern for Other Search Engines!

Google or Bing is already capable of searching Facebook posts. If you search something on Google which is already shared by someone on Facebook, Google will show that Facebook page in search result.

But as there is an improvement on Facebook Search, Google may loose some traffic. Many tips and tricks, news, tutorials are now being shared on Facebook Groups, Profiles of Pages other than blogs or websites. And naturally people may start searching something on Facebook since it enables the users to search for posts!

And what, if Facebook starts a complete web search engine in the future? Mr. Google - Beware!

Google Talk is Gonna be Shut Down!!

Google Talk Logo

Few days ago, I just signed in to Google Talk and got the following message -

Google Talk app for Windows is no longer supported. It is being replaced by the new Hangouts Chrome app. Install the Hangouts app from http://goo.gl/yglfk6.

It's my post number 400! I'm really sorry to publish a bad news in this post. But I promise, in post number 500, I will try to write something exceptional. I've already got the idea for that post!

I was really surprised and shocked after getting this message. To chat with my friends and blog visitors, most of the time Google Talk is my first choice. I don't like chatting in Gmail because it's heavy and slower.

Google is trying to promote its Hangout app for Android, Mac and Windows operating system. They are also trying to move the Internet world to Google Chrome. That's why Windows users can't use Hangout without Chrome. Hangout is installed as a Chrome extension which is really bothering.

But I think Google Talk was a really smart tool to communicate with people. Google could develop the app instead of shutting it down. And some of the Google Talk features are not available in Hangout. In slower connection, you may need to fight to connect to the Hangout. It's really frustrating.

Last year Google announced that - Google Talk app for Windows is being retired. And from this month, Google Talk users are getting the following message from gmail.com:

Google Talk Chat Box

Now Google is offering the Hangout app. It's a cross-platform application. You can get this tool from:

Google Hangout PNG Logo

Hangout looks smart but I think some changes are necessary. Think about file sharing. Google Talk users can share files but this feature is not available on Hangout. Of course you can share images through Hangout. And it also allows you to draw something in chat window.

Google Hangout Screenshot

You can still use Google Talk. But time is very short - maybe two months at best. And then Google Talk will be turned off forever! :(

Let's Try Windows 10 !!!

Windows 10 Technical Preview

Hello Guys! You should remember, couple of weeks ago I wrote - Windows 9 Preview is on the way. Yes, everything is okay except the name. Microsoft has skipped Windows 9! On 1st October, Windows 10 Technical Preview has been released by Microsoft. And this version of Windows will work with all devices!

I was trying to write about what's new in Windows 10. I also downloaded an ISO copy of Windows 10 from a torrent site. But unfortunately, when I was installing it from my flash drive, the installation stopped at 46%! :(

It's very natural and common problem. Because I couldn't download the file at a time. The download was interrupted several times. And one of the files was missing.

Windows 10 Technical Preview Serial Key

If you're supposed to enter a serial key, then use the following -

NKJFK-GPHP7-G8C3J-P6JXR-HQRJR

System Requirements

Hopefully, your PC will work fine with Windows 10. If you're capable of running Windows Vista, 7 or 8 then you will have no problem to use Windows 10. You PC should meet at least the following requirements:
  • Minimum 1 GHz Processor (Dual Core or better)

  • Minimum 2 GB RAM

  • Minimum 16 GB Free Space on a Partition

Windows 10 for Every Devices

Procedure
  1. Find your necessary version of Windows and download it from this page. If you're required to sign in, use your hotmail or live account.
  2. Burn the ISO file to a disk or to a usb flash drive
  3. Back up your necessary files from currently installed Windows directory.
  4. Now you can start installing Windows.

What's New?

It's difficult to write about new features of Windows without using it. But I'm trying to write something which I've found from different blogs:
  • Traditional Start Menu is back (Live tiles are still available).
  • Modern Apps work in desktop mode.
  • Apps will be snapped like frequently visited pages saved in a browser.
  • You can create Multipe Desktops as we can see in Android mobile sets.
  • File search is much faster.

Windows 9 Preview is on the Way!!

Windows 9 Desktop

Many Windows OS users haven't tried Windows 8 yet. Even some of them are using Windows XP and thinking to swich to the Windows 7. And Microsoft is still passing a hard time to encourage users to use Windows 8. In this situation, Windows 9 (Threshold) Preview is gonna be released at the end of Septemeber, maybe 30th September. And to be honest, I'm just waiting for it.

Because you know, I try all the preview versions of new Windows. Because I've to inform my visitors about new way of using the Windows. And as soon as I'm getting Windows 9 Preview, I will start exploring it.

So, What's New?

Nobody can give you any straight answer. Because the changes will only be visible after the release. But information gets leaked easily. I've searched information from different sites. So far, I've got the following changes to be experienced in the next version of Windows -
  • Windows Charm could be vanished. Many users get puzzled while turning off the PC from charm!
  • Windows Icons could be changed a lot as you can see in the image.
  • New Windows could be responsive to device types and screen sizes. It maybe capable of adapting itself with tablets, mobiles and desktop.
  • Return of Start Menu with different look.
  • Current start menu might take the form of mini start menu
  • More Metro Apps with reduced OS size
  • Better support for high resolution screens
  • Improved Power Management

These expected changes are just based on rumors. The facts will be revealed after the release of Windows 9 Preview. :)

What about the Final Version?

Maybe the final version of Windows 9 will be released within April 2015. And Microsoft is planning to provide Windows 9 for those users who will stop using Windows XP, Vista or 7 and upgrade this to Windows 9!

I can't wait for the New OS. :)
