8.00 GB (4.89 GB Usable) Solved!

Corsair 8 GB DDR4 RAM

Well this is a very common issue for the Windows users. Often you may experience this sort of problems. On your computer properties you may notice only 4.89 GB of RAM usable out of 8.00 GB. Or 3.41 GB usable out of 4.00 GB.

If the difference is not very significant then I suggest you not to take any action. Suppose if 7.86 GB is usable out of 8.00 GB then it's pretty okay. No action needs to be taken at this situation. Cause those portion of RAM might be used by the system hardware.

Windows 10 Computer Properties

But when the difference between installed RAM and usable RAM is too much then you must find out the reason and take necessary action to resolve the issue. Otherwise you can't get the optimum performance.

Tips: You can check your system properties by simply pressing Start + Pause. Or right click on My Computer/ Computer Icon and choose Properties.

Probable Reasons
  • You're using 32 bit version of Windows.
  • The Mainboard/ Motherboard can't handle the amount of installed RAM.
  • Your system is very old and BIOS version is also old.
  • The unusable portion of RAM is reserved by hardware.

Note: Windows XP and Windows 7 Starter Edition can't use more than 2 GB RAM. So if you're using 4 GB or 8 GB there, then it's nothing but waste. Also remember that the later editions of Windows (32 bit) can use maximum 4 GB of RAM. Windows 7 Pro & Above (64 bit) versions can handle up to 192 GB of RAM if supported by your Motherboard.

What to Try
  • Check System Configuration: If you have a new computer with updated version of 64 bit Windows then this is the main reason of less usable memory. Press Start > Type msconfig > Hit Enter > System Configuration window will appear on the screen. Then go to Boot > Advanced Options > Unmark Maximum memory if it's checked. Now restart your PC and hopefully the problem is fixed!

Boot Options in System Comfiguration

Boot Options in System Configuration

  • If the above method doesn't work, then you should check the capacity of your motherboard. You can get this information from manufacturer's website. If your motherboard has a limited capacity of using RAM i.e. (2 GB or 4GB) then your system needs to be updated.
  • Or you can try updating your BIOS version. But don't try to do this if you're a normal user.

Hope this will solve your problem. If the problem continues then don't hesitate to contact Marks PC. I'll be available at your service . . .

Get Photo Viewer Back in Windows 10 !!

Get Photo Viewer back in Windows 10

Microsoft is playing with the users. They've made so many stupid changes that puzzled the Windows 10 users. By default, Windows 10 users are not allowed to use Windows Photo Viewer. Instead, we're forced to use a new app called - Photos! Though it provides a number of options for image editing, as a viewer, it's not good at all.

The most funny thing is that, Microsoft hasn't removed the Windows Photo Viewer at all. It's just disabled. By adding a small registry file, you can easily re-enable it! My question is - what is the logic behind hiding it? What's the benefit of Microsoft??

Enable Windows Photo Viewer
  1. Download the Registry Key from here. It's only 3 KB!
  2. Unzip it.
  3. Double click on the file WPV.reg and hit Yes > Yes > OK.
  4. You're done and Good to go!

Open Photos/ Images through Photo Viewer

  1. Right click on any image.
  2. Open with > Choose another app
  3. Click on More apps to see the full app list
  4. Select Windows Photo Viewer
  5. Mark the option - Always use this app
  6. Hit OK.

Windows 10 Open With App List

In the above example, you can see only .JPG files to be viewed through Photo Viewer. But you can run the same operation for PNG, GIF or any other image format. Then those pictures will also be displayed via Windows Photo Viewer.

The Registry File

The registry file I'm sharing is -

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell]

Desktop Icon Settings Window

Microsoft is Getting Crazy!

I'm fed up with Microsoft! They've just made some wrong changes for last few versions of Windows. I can point them out -

  • Removing .Net Framework 3.5
  • Removing My Computer Icon from Desktop
  • Disabling Automatic Update Control settings
  • Removing date calculation option from Calculator
  • Removing Windows Update from Control Panel
  • Poor Start Menu (Windows 8 Start Menu was better)
  • Overall difficult settings - absolutely absurd!

They've also decided not to release any more new version of Windows OS! So, we're not getting any better version soon . . .

At the end of last year, I've published another post on disabling Windows 10 Auto Update. But it doesn't work with Windows Home edition. If you're using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise edition, then follow the link below -

  • In this situation, we've used the above patch and it worked fine.

It's been a few days and we haven't detected any such irritating message yet. We will suggest you use this activator and inform us how it works. Please comment . . .

Disable Automatic Update in Windows 10

Turn off Automatic Update

As I mentioned earlier, Windows 10 has come with some boring changes. One of the stupid changes is related to Automatic Update. In Windows 10, you're set to automatically install new updates. And you've no choice to change this settings. Because the change settings option is disable.

Applies to: Windows 10

When you Disable Automatic Update?

  • If your net bandwidth is limited
  • If you don't need windows updates at all
  • If the updates cause activators not work in your PC

In earlier versions of Windows (Windows 7, 8 or 8.1), you can manually configure the update settings. There were four settings:
  • Install updates automatically
  • Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
  • Check for updates but let me choose . . .
  • Never check for updates

In Windows 10, you don't have any option to choose any of these settings. It's simply disabled. You can't use the drop down menu. Look at the image below:

Update Settings is Disabled in Windows 10

But still you have a chance to configure Windows Update. And you've to enable this settings from Group Policy Editor. In this post, I'm gonna discuss about enabling/ disabling Automatic Update of Windows 10.

Instruction

  1. Press Start+R > Type gpedit.msc > Press Enter.
  2. Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > All Settings.
  3. Find Configure Automatic Updates (Press C to go there quickly).
  4. Choose Enable > There are 5 choices in the Options > Choose # 5 - Allow local admin to choose setting.
  5. Apply > OK.

Configure Auto Update from Group Policy

Now your automatic update settings will be like this -

Enabling Update Settings on Windows 10

Have you noticed that the Never Check for Updates option is not available here? This option is vanished from this settings. Anyway, you can stop checking for updates completely.

Never Check for Updates

If you even don't need to check for updates, then follow the steps below -
  1. Run > gpedit.msc > Enter
  2. Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > All Settings
  3. Double Click on Configure Automatic Updates
  4. Choose Disabled > Apply > OK.

Now your update settings will be disabled again. But this time, you Windows will never check for any updates!

Enable Never Check for Updates Option

If Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) is not Available?

Then follow this system -

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Scroll to the bottom > Windows Update > Startup Type > Choose Manual > Apply > OK.

Hope this will help. Take a reboot if necessary.

Fix these problems too!

Get Start Screen Back in Windows 10

Windows 10 Start Menu with Live Tiles

Windows 8 came with a really smart look. But due to the negative feedback, the latest version of Windows (Windows 10) has come with traditional Start Menu. And to be honest, I can hardly find any change in Windows 10 which I can appreciate.

Applies to - Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Combination of Start Menu & Tiles

It looks really frustrating. To be honest it's not worth of including here. In this combination, I can't work comfortably. And I guess most of the users have already adjusted with Windows 8 Start Screen. So it was not necessary to change this feature in Windows 10. Windows 8 lovers will hardly appreciate the new look!

Windows 10 Start Menu with Live Tiles

Anyway, if you are comfortable with Start Screen and wanna get it back, there is no problem at all. You can easily switch between Start Menu and Start Screen. Simply follow the steps below:

Enable Start Screen in Windows 10

  1. Right Click on your taskbar and select Properties.
  2. Go to the Start Menu tab.
  3. At the top, you will find this option marked - Use the Start Menu instead of the Start Screen.
  4. Simply click on the checkbox and unmark this option.
  5. Hit on Apply > OK and get your smart Start Screen back!

Installing .Net Framework 3.5 in Windows 10

.Net Framework 3.5 is missing by default as it was in Windows 8 and 8.1. And it causes problems while running those software which require this feature. Don't worry. You can install .Net Framework 3.5 following the same instruction as it was in Windows 8. Simply follow this method

How to Disable or Enable Autoplay?

Disable Windows Autoplay

By default, when you insert any removable media (ie. Flash Drive, CD etc.) on your PC, windows will automatically open the drive. Or it may play media or start program contained by that drive. If you're good to go with this Autoplay Policy, then it's okay. But if your PC is vulnerable to virus, then you must turn off Autoplay.

There are different methods for different versions of Windows which you can use to turn off Autoplay. But I'm gonna show you a universal method which applies to all running versions of Windows.

Enable/ Disable Autoplay - Universal Method

Applies to:
  • Windows 2000/ XP
  • Windows Vista/ 7
  • Windows 8/ 8.1

I would like to use Group Policy Editor to perform this task. Simply follow the steps below:
  1. Press Start + R to open Run.
  2. Type gpedit.msc > Press Enter.
  3. Now you will get the Group Policy Editor window.
  4. Hit on Administrative Template under Computer Configuration > Windows Components > AutoPlay Policies > Double Click on Turn of Autoplay.
  5. There are three options - Not Configured/ Enabled/ Disabled. To turn off Autoplay, choose - Enabled > Apply > OK.
  6. If you choose Not Configured or Disabled, Autoplay will be Enabled

How to turn off autoplay by gpedit.msc

Note: Autoplay Policy is available both on Computer and User Configuration. You should always use Computer Configuration. Because if there is any conflict between the two, Computer Configuration settings will be preferred.

Turn off Autoplay - Shortcut Method

Another handy way to turn off Autoplay is choosing - Take No Action. When you insert any media on your PC, Windows may ask you what to do?

In that time, you can simply choose Take No Action to turn off Autoplay.

Turn Off Autoplay

Note: If you choose any action, next time this notification will not appear.

Turn off/ on Autoplay from Control Panel

You can also turn autoplay on/ off from control panel. Follow the steps below:

Convert VCF to CSV by Contact Converter

VCF File Converter

Contact Converter is the most reliable tool to convert vCard File (.vcf) to .csv file which can be opened by MS Excel. Contact Converter allows you to convert unlimited number of contacts. It's a 100% free software, easy to use and supports Google Contacts.

Background Story

Yesterday, one of my colleagues told me that he has a back up of his iPhone contacts in a pen drive. He wanted to know, how to print those contacts. Then I asked him to show me the file.  I opened the file in a PC and saw there are over 600 .vcf files!

And to be honest, I never work with .vcf files. I even didn't know what type of file this is before writing this post! Then I took his pen drive to my home though I was sure that I couldn't do anything!

Last night, I googled and found a software named Contact Converter. And with this tool, my task got easier. Within few minutes I converted the vCard files to CSV. Then I've edited the CSV file in Excel and printed the document without any problem!

What is .vcf (vCard) File?

You should know about .vcf file. It's a type of file which can be used to back up the contacts of your phone. And later you can restore those contacts in another phone. But if you need to view those contacts in PC or if you need to print them, simply you can't!

Because vCard files are not saved as a single file. For every contact, there will be a unique .vcf file. If you have 500 contacts, 500 vCard files will be created. You can't either view them in a single file or print them. I faced the same problem.

There is a logical reason behind single file for single contact. A vCard contact may include different information. Such as - Name, Email, Company, Website, Home Phone, Office Phone,  Address, Date of Birth and even Picture. That's why, each contact is saved in a separate file.

Features of Contact Converter
  • 100% Free!
  • Super Fast - Complete action within seconds
  • Reliable and easy to use
  • Capable of converting unlimited number of contacts
  • Support Google Contacts

Convert Contact Logo

How to Convert VCF to CSV?
  1. Download Contact Converter and Unzip it. Install the setup file properly.
  2. Double click on the desktop icon to run the software.
  3. At the top, make sure the option Contact to CSV file is selected.
  4. Then you will have two options - Add Contact Files and Add Folder.
  5.  Hit on the Add Folder option if you have multiple contacts.
  6. Now browse and locate your vCard files.
  7. By default, all contacts will be selected. You can deselect some contacts if you like.
  8. Now hit on the Convert Contacts button.
  9. Within 2/3 seconds, the operation will be completed. Look at the available fields at the right. You can remove some fields if necessary. Now hit on the Save as button and save it as CSV.
  10. Open the CSV file in Excel and make necessary changes! It's easy. :)
