Customize the Default Settings of MS Office


How to Change the Default Settings in MS Office?


This is somewhat difficult to write about. Delivering the message to the reader is somewhat complicated. New users of Microsoft Office may not get my point. But a regular  user of Microsoft Office must understand what I'm talking about. 


What is Default Settings? 

When you open up a new document in MS Word (Suppose Word 2010), you get the followings: 
  • Paper Size: Letter (8.5*11)
  • Orientation: Portrait
  • Font: Calibiri
  • Font Size: 11
  • Font Style: Regular
  • Line Spacing: 1.15
  • After Spacing: 10 pt
  • Margin: Normal (Top, Bottom, Left, Right: 1")
  • And so many . . . 
This is called the default settings Microsoft Word. The settings you get just after opening a program is called the default settings of that program. The developers try to use the most common settings as the default settings. So that most of the users don't need to change the settings frequently. 


But the reality is quite fantastic! Every organization has its own method of working. Every person has his own choice. Naturally we need to modify the default settings of a program. 



Customizing the Default Settings:

To make Microsoft Office more convenient, there is a Set as Default button in some dialogue boxes. When you change default settings from a dialogue box, you can press the Set as Default button to make it default. 


Note: Default Settings varies from version to version. 


Example:

There could be more than 100 dialogue boxes, where you can change the default settings. But you know this is impossible to show the procedure for each window. Here I will just show  one example of customizing the default settings. I would like to show how to customize the default settings of Page Setup window of MS Word 2010: 
  1. Run Microsoft Word
  2. Go to Page Setup
  3. Set up margin as your choice (Suppose 1" for top, bottom, left & right)
  4. Choose paper size (Suppose A4) 
  5. If you want this settings for all of your documents as default, then press the Set as Default button at the bottom left corner. Press Yes to confirm.

From now, when you open a new document, you will get the paper size A4, and margin 1" as defualt settings.

Windows 8.1 KMS Activator !!!


Activate Windows 8.1 by KMS

  1. Download the zipped file - It's only 320 KB Only!
  2. Unzip the file. (You can read the instruction file)
  3. Run the KMS 8.1 as Administrator.
  4. Look at the KMS Screenshot below.
  5. There are mainly three options: 1. Windows  2. Office  3. Both
  6. Press either 1, 2 or 3 as your need and hit Enter.
  7. When you press the key, suppose 1, operation will start. Let this work.
  8. While running this for the first time, you might be supposed to allow something.
  9. After successfully installing the KMS on your system, you will get the confirmation message. 
  10. Close the window and check your activation status from System Properties. (Press Start + Pause to open System Properties)

How to Activate WIndows 8.1 by KMS


Hope you will be able to activate your Office and Windows. When I tried this activator, my net connection was active. But you can keep your net disconnected while running this operation. Page Setup & Printing Tips for MS Excel

Beginners are usually scared while printing from Microsoft Excel. They face problem when setting up page or margin. I had the same problem few years ago. Remember, when you can't do something, never give up. Try to do it with care. You will learn through mistake. I've just wasted some papers to understand which option does what. And thus I learned how to print excel workbook properly . . . :) 


In this post, I'm gonna discuss about Page Setup, Margin and Print option of Microsoft Excel. Since I'm using version 2010, it will difficult for me to show the related screenshots of 2003 and 2007. But I will try to make it clear for the users of previous versions. 


Microsoft Excel 2003:  

Before I begin, I'd like to say you, upgrade to Office 2010. This is really an amazing version of Microsoft Office. If you're still using 2003 or 2007, you're just missing the magic! Okay let's start -

Page Setup: You should set up your page properly to print a workbook. Otherwise you may get the wrong output. Some lines of your workbook might be missing.

Find the Page Setup option from the File menu. Now go to the Page tab. Set your Orientation - Portrait or Landscape. Choose Paper Size - A4/ Letter/ Legal as your need.

Now move to the Margin tab. Set your margin for Top, Bottom, Left & Right. Then hit OK.

Look at your workbook. Now you will be able to see the boundary of your workbook. Each page will have a boundary. If any part of your workbook is out of this boundary, it will be printed in the next page. So, if you need to adjust your text, you must follow this boundary. If a minor portion of your workbook is out of this boundary, you can reduce your margin to increase the printing area.

Print: Look at the image below:

Print Range: If you choose All, everything in the current workbook will be printed. Nobody usually do so. We will use the Print What option. If you need to print a particular part of your workbook, just select it. Then press Ctrl + P and Choose Selection. Hit on the OK button.

If you can manage to set your contents in a single page (within a boundary) then you can go to the Print Range option. Then select Page(s) box. Type 1 to 1 in the From and To box. Hit OK. That's it.


Microsoft Excel 2007 & 2010:

Except some new features, Office 2007 and 2010 have got almost similar interface. Page setup and printing option is almost same in both versions. I guess you all are able to set up page and margin in Excel.

In ribbon interface, you will get the Page Setup option under Page Layout Tab. Click at the right bottom corner to get the Page Setup Dialogue box. Now set up page and margin as you need.


Print: Look at the image below to set up the print options:

Though the interface is quite different from that of Excel 2003, the options are almost similar. You can choose Active Sheet or Selection or Page Range. Nothing is confusing. You can get this dialogue options by pressing Ctrl + P. And these options are same in both 2007 and 2010.

If you wanna print a particular part of your workbook, just select that part and then press Ctrl + P > Choose Selection > Print.



What's New in Excel 2010?

At the beginning, I said you're missing magic! What's this? I'm sharing a little example with you. In 2010, you have the Page Layout View like Word!

You know what is page layout view? Or can you guess? Excel 2010 lets you divide your sheet into different pages. This is somewhat similar to the pages of MS Word. If you divide your sheet into pages, you will never be confused while printing a document! Look at the image below to do it:

When you run Excel, the default mode is Normal. To activate the page layout option, you have to go to the right bottom corner. There you will get the zoom option. And just left to the zoom option, you will get Normal, Page Layout and Page Break Preview button. The middle button is Page Layout.

Download the zipped file from this link. This file is named as Office & Windows and the size is less than 3 MB. Now follow the instruction below: 

  1. Download and extract the files. (Have a look at the Read Me file)
  2. Run the file Office & Windows.exe to start the operation. 
  3. Keep installing the program as you normally do in case of other programs. Next > Next > Next . . .
  4. Now look at the image at the top. 
  5. Wait few moments. Hit on the Red Button when it is active.  
  6. Check your activation status - Right Click on Computer > Properties > Windows Activation

While running this operation, make sure your PC is connected to the Net.

When you save a file in Word 2007 or 2010, the file will be saved as example.docx. But Word 2003 or earlier version will support only .doc format. And naturally you will not be able to open .docx file in Office 2003.

Suppose you use Office 2010. You save a file as example.docx. You don't have printer. You're going to print your document from a shop. And this is your term paper submission deadline. You're far away of your home. When you're trying to open your document in that shop it shows some random symbols. Because it is Office XP or 2003. What do you do now?

Get back home? (Do you have time enough?) 
Purchase a new CD and install it there? (Will the shop man allow you to do so?) 
Find another shop who use Office 2003? (If you don't find?) 
Trying to collect any tool that allows Office 2003 to open docx format? (Difficult to collect!)

How to Type More than 15 Digits in MS Excel?




If you are a regular user of Microsoft Excel then you might be in danger while typing more than 15 digits in a cell. If you type 1111222233334444 then it will be 1111222233334440. Or if you type 25127680876675435 then it will be 25127680876675400. Simply the digits after 15th place will be changed to zeros! Doesn't it seem peculiar? 


Today I will explain when & why this problem occurs and how you can solve it easily. 


When the Problem Occurs?

The problem occurs when you try to type more than 15 digits in a cell like below: 

####-####-####-####
1234324545679876

But when you press Enter, the output will be 1234324545679870. Excel changes the last digit to a 0. And why someone needs to type more than 15 digits in a cell? It can't be a currency figure. 

Usually when you type a Credit Card/ Debit Card/ BO Account Number you have to type 16 digits. And the calculation of excel doesn't allow you to type more than 15 digits. That's why it converts the last digits (after 15th place) into zeros.  


Reason

You may ask - why Excel restricts users to type 15 digits in a cell? I'm also searching for a satisfactory answer. I found the following reason from Microsoft Support

Excel follows the IEEE 754 specification on how to store and calculate floating-point numbers. Excel therefore stores only 15 significant digits in a number, and changes digits after the fifteenth place to zeroes. 

I don't know what does it mean! :) Anyway, I can show you several ways to get rid of this problem . . . 


Solution

There are several ways through which you can avoid this problem. First I'd like to show you an easy way:

Method 1: Putting Inverted (') Before the Number

When you type more than 15 digits in a cell, just place an inverted comma ( ' ) before that number. And that mark will not be displayed on the sheet after pressing Enter! Though it will be displayed in the formula bar. Look at the image below: 


I don't know why the inverted mark disappears automatically. But I can explain why the 16th digit doesn't change to 0. Because when you type ' before a number then Excel doesn't consider this value as Number. It maybe consider the cell as text. That's why it remains unchanged. 


Method 2: Format the Cell as Text

Maybe the 2nd method is more useful. Before typing more than 16 digits in a cell, you have to format those cells as text. 

You need to select the cells first. Office 2003 users will find the Format Cell options from the Format Menu > Cells > Format Cells. And Office 2007 and 2010 users will get this as below:

Format cell window is same in all version of MS Excel. After selecting the cells, you will just need to choose the Text option and then hit OK. That's it. 

Now you will be able to type more than thousand characters in a single cell!

  • For any reason, if this activator doesn't work, then you follow this method

After successfully activating the Windows, you will be shown the confirmation message. And you can also find it by pressing Start + Pause as the image shows below:

Clean Up your PC to Avoid Overheating Problem

It's just about two days ago. I had been working on my PC for one and half hour. Suddenly the system got shut down without showing any error message! Immediately after 10 or 15 seconds I tried to power on the system. Power signal appeared but lasted for only 3 seconds. Then I pushed the switch again but same thing happened. I decided to wait for few minutes. At the third attempt I was able to turn on the system. 


After turning on the system, I ran an application named Speccy, a program that shows detailed information about computer, to check the system temperature. Oh my Goodness, I was really surprised seeing the result. My room is not air conditioned and its temperature may be under 30 degree Celsius. But the system temperature was as below:

Processor               :   820 to 850
Motherboard       :   750  to 800
Hard Disk             :   500 and Above 

So, what happened actually? What's the reason. Was it caused by the room temperature? No, not at all. Because only 300 temperature is nothing for a PC. Actually the problem was dust. Yes, I haven't open the PC case for more than a year. And I didn't clean it up for a long time. CPU Fan, Motherboard and all other parts of the system unit was under dust! 

So I opened the case and cleaned it up properly. After cleaning up the system the temperature was as below:

Processor               :   550 to 600
Motherboard       :   550  to 580
Hard Disk             :   450 to 500

This looks quite normal. Isn't it? 


It's been more than a year when I wrote a post about Computer Maintenance: Extend Your PC Life. Of course it applies only for Desktop PC. 

Many beginner level PC users report that- My PC gets restarted after running for a few hours. One of the prime reasons for this problem is Overheating. Sometimes it might be caused by virus. In other cases if your Windows is not genuine, then it may be restarted automatically by Windows itself. 

Now, I would like to discuss how to clean up the system unit of a desktop PC. Open the PC case. Observe the internal condition of the system- Amount of Dust. If you have a machine to clean dust use it carefully. Otherwise clean it using a soft cloth or any other cleaning materials. Make sure the piece of cloth is not wet

Gently clean the Motherboard, RAM, CPU Fan, Hard Disk Surface etc. Remove the CPU fan if possible. Then clean it properly with a brush. Unplug and plug the internal connectors with care. You should clean your PC in that way 2 times a year. 


Precautions:

While cleaning the system, keep in find the following issues:
  • Never rub the surface of the Motherboard with pressure. Because it consists of numerous connections that look like zigzag lines. 
  • Make sure the tissue or cloth you're using is not wet.
  • The cloth should be as soft as possible.
  • Unplug and plug the internal connectors properly. Never blend any pin. 
  • While rubbing by the side of a capacitor, make sure you're not pressuring it. If any of the capacitors breaks down then you get a lot works to do . . . ! 

Whatever you do, do it with care. If you are not capable enough, then take help from expert.

If you're a blogger or article writer then you must know how to report a blog or website copying your contents. You should know how to punish the defaulter. There are a number of logical reasons for which you should punish those culprits. In this post I'm gonna try to give you an idea about taking actions against plagiarists


It has been more than a year since I've started blogging. Earlier this blog was very small in terms of number of posts, topics, categories, visitors etc. But now this site has more than 200 posts. Everyday I've to handle many comments and requests. And everyday I get a good number of unique visitors in this site. But with the increasing popularity of the site I've discovered a serious problem! Some fake bloggers are copying posts from here without linking back! 


I spend thousands of my valuable hours to write posts, to design related images, to gather necessary information. And when I see few of my posts published in other blogs without referral link I get disappointed. A post that requires 2 hours to write, being copied in 2 minutes! Doesn't it bother you? 


Not only me, this problem belongs to every popular blog owners and article writers. But what's wrong if your posts are being copied? Or why should you stop someone from copying your posts? Look at the reasons below:

Why Should you Stop the Thieves? 

  • To Protect Search Rank: Google/search engine demands unique articles. So, when someone copies your posts, Google may ignore your site in the search results. In a word, the plagiarist is ultimately reducing your page rank and SEO
  • To Save AdSense Account: If your site is  AdSense approved then you're in the middle of a great trouble! An important requirement of the AdSense Program is unique content. So when your site is being copied your AdSense account could be disabled at any time! Or if you're trying to approve your AdSense account Google may reject this due to the duplicate content.
  • Keep Visitors: Moreover when someone is copying your posts he is actually taking away your potential visitors! That means you're losing new visitors. 
  • Emotional Aspect: And finally, no one has the right to copy your contents. It is your intellectual property. This is really frustrating for your blogging career. If stupid bloggers continue to copy your posts ultimately you will lose your interest in blogging! 



How to Protect your Contents/ How to Report Plagiarism


How you will protect your contents? Using Java Script to disable the copy option? Definitely not. There are two ways/steps you can follow. Follow them sequentially: 


Step 1: First Aid Method

Never skip this system. At the first step you should contact with the site's Admin where you've found your posts. Comment below the post requesting to link back to your site. Or contact with the person directly to give a referral link in your posts. 

If he doesn't agree then request him to remove the copied posts. Most of the cases they may not reply. Sometimes they might dishonor you directly. 

And if the person respond positively then you're lucky. You don't need to proceed to the step 2. 



Step 2: Surgical Treatment 

If the step 1 (First Aid) fails then you should go for the surgical treatment. Hopefully this method will be able to solve your problem. But before taking any action you have to make sure: 
  • Your contents are unique. 
  • Not breaking any rules and regulation.
  • Not copied from another site.

Here I will suggest three tasks for you. Do these properly.
  1. Copyright your Contents: You should copyright your contents. You can do this at MyFreeCopyright. Don't be afraid. It is 100% free! All you need is just to visit the site and register an account with your email ID. Then confirm your account and register your site's link in that site. After registering your link, you should place a widget on your site from myfreecopyright.com. So that they are able to access your site's contents and inform you when other sites copy-paste your posts. 
  2. Identify the Thieves: How do you catch the thieves? Not very tough. Do you know about Copyscape? Copyscape.com will help you to identify the sites that steal your contents. Go to the site. Copy and paste your site's url and search for the duplicate contents. Now you will see the list of URLs that copied your articles. You can also use their free banner. Or you can use premium service provided by copyscape if you want. 
  3. Take Action: This is virtual world. So you can't easily sue against a person for copying your posts. Police, FBI, BSS, Detectives can't solve your problems. Instead of law enforcing agencies you can report to Google DMCA to remove the copied contents. Or you can directly go to this page if that person use blogger blog. Never make wrong appeal. It might be harmful for your site. 


Advice for the Bloggers: 

  • Try to write unique articles
  • Never copy from other sites (even with referral link)
  • Use copyscpace regularly to catch the article thieves
  • Register your site on myfreecopyright.com 
  • Never write anything that breaks laws and regulations
  • When someone copies your posts request him to link back to your site or politely tell him to remove your contents
  • If you fail to prevent stupid persons from copying your contents then go for the legal actions as stated above. 


Advice for the Plagiarist:  

You maybe new in blogging so you might have an intention to copy posts written by others. But why don't you link back to original posts? If you want to be a professional blogger then try to write yourself.

You may not have enough ideas. But if you never try to write yourself then you will never be successful. You can't go a long way by copying the posts written by other bloggers. 

If you would like to share an article on your site, then don't forget to link back to the original post. 

Definitely you will be a good blogger in the future. In that time, if someone copy your contents, how do you feel then?
